I don't know if this has been posted yet or not. A message from Chris' brother Peter Cornell:
FRIENDS;
It's been difficult to put words together. My heart is broken. Chris was always just my brother. We just "were". No pretense. No dog and pony show. We didn't have to get deep all the time. Sometimes we only needed to just be in the same room and just be present. That was enough.

It wasn't until this week, it really hit me how he belonged to the world. That he is an icon and a legend. That being said, I am so sorry to YOU for your loss. Artists, actors, musicians. We rely on these people to lift us up. To inspire us and distract us in times of trouble. Chris protected us when we needed him to. His one of a kind-ness surrounded us like a suit of armor. He was a warrior and a wizard. A howling wolf and a trusted mentor.

My brother gave freely of his gifts and it was never a struggle. He kept himself from the saturation of celebrity in such a humble way. The power and anger and passion of my brother's music was always genuine, original and legitimate. He was the powerful, sensitive, fragile, angry, mystical creature that will exist forever in his body of work. And he did it for ALL of us. Giving it away. Leaving all on the stage or in the recordings that will keep him immortal.

I will never wrap my head around his passing. I've been in shock since I heard the news. I can't and won't let him go.

Please know, with all the humility I can muster from the depths of a pulverized heart, I THANK EACH OF YOU for your kindness and condolences. THANK YOU for finding me through YOUR tears.

Hold your brothers close.
Much Love!

Someone was asking who was the most beautiful girl at L’Avenue. You got up in front of everyone, looked all around, and came back and pointed at me.

...

You moved into the Beverly Hills Hotel because I was staying there. You woke up one morning doing flips on the bed. You asked me to come sit with you, and you said you had to take your necklace back. I thought no — why? But you proceeded to cut it off and take the silver ring it was on. You said, “I woke up and I had the strangest vision of doing this. I’m not prepared with a real ring but I want to marry you.” The ring fit perfectly and while you surprised me with a Harry Winston several weeks later, I could not bear to take it off, and I used it as my wedding band. The two always represented how different you and I were, but how perfectly we fit together.

...

You had always said I saved you, that you wouldn’t be alive if it were not for me.
Yeesh.

The magazine's retelling of the events surrounding the interview gives better context:
People Magazine wrote: The aperture was black with a darkness almost material. That tenebrousness was indeed a positive quality; for it obscured such parts of the inner walls as ought to have been revealed, and actually burst forth like smoke from its aeon-long imprisonment, visibly darkening the sun as it slunk away into the shrunken and gibbous sky on flapping membraneous wings. The odour rising from the newly opened depths was intolerable, and at length the quick-eared Hawkins thought he heard a nasty, slopping sound down there. Everyone listened, and everyone was listening still when It lumbered slobberingly into sight and gropingly squeezed Its gelatinous green immensity through the black doorway into the tainted outside air of that poison city of madness.

That is a really great letter. Chris' inner circle is clearly crushed and still in shock. I think everyone from the musician community that is coming out with these tributes, either through twitter or performing his songs, are those that are a few degrees separated from him. Alot of them knew him as a fellow musician, or friendly with him, so they do a cover of Black Hole Sun and that's their message of remembering him. People like his brother are going through a whole different thing. I'd put the PJ guys in this category. I listened to his Stern interview from a few years ago, and he has a nonexistent relationship with his parents, especially his father. I think his fellow Seattle musicians are almost like family to him. I hope people like Kim Thayil, and Ben, and Matt, and the PJ can at some point feel okay to express something publicly. I think it would help. What I love about his brother's letter here is that he seems to really understand that he's not the only on in shock, that the fans are rattled by this, and he's trying to reach out and say "yeah, this is fucked up, let's mourn together."

She sounds like a Kardashian, which is not to say that they do not have feelings as well, but it comes across as really slick, and even concerned with which brand the ring was at such a time. His brother on the other hand, sounds like a great guy. He is thinking of others in this difficult time.

The headline makes it sound like this article is going to be tabloidish, but this actually is a really nice piece written by David Fricke with new interviews from a bunch of people in his orbit:

O'Brien produced Cornell's latest solo album, 2015's Higher Truth, and had recently done sessions with Cornell for a potential record of cover versions.
Aw man I would have loved to have heard that. Hope it gets released at some point.

That Ed didn't throw in a Soundgarden or TOTD song makes me think a little higher of him.
