Listening to the Singles deluxe edition today. Some good stuff on that 2nd disk - obviously finally having "Missing" in good quality is great. For some reason I thought it was the demo version of 'Birth Ritual' that was there, but to my pleasant surprise it's actually a live version. I assume it's the one from the movie? When/where was that recorded, does anyone know?
I also didn't expect much from the two score pieces by Chris, but 'Ferry Boat #3' is actually a real song, with fleshed-out arrangements and lyrics. A nice addition to his canon.

I listen to a bunch of his covers on YouTube yesterday, some gems in there. The U2/Metallica mashup was fucking with my head, I don't see how a performer could keep that straight.

I was definitely struck by this, as well. That and the fact that he would return to these lyrics more than a decade later with Audioslave and "The Curse."

Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament on Chris Cornell: Seattle's 'Greatest Songwriter'

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament opened up for the first time about the death of his friend and one-time bandmate Chris Cornell in a new interview.

"Jimi Hendrix included, Chris was the greatest songwriter to ever come out of Seattle," Ament told the NBA.com podcast NBA Soundsystem.

"Hendrix could play the guitar like crazy, but Chris had the songwriting chops that we all sort of hope to get to… He had a way that he could wrap a melody around odd time signatures and weird parts and make them catchy. And he was a beautiful wordsmith."

The bassist, Cornell's Temple of the Dog bandmate, also spoke about the Soundgarden singer's talent and legacy. "If you look at his lyrics, he was obviously processing his pain and his depression and all those things. I think that's part of what people, myself included, responded to when he was singing."

Ament added, "And then with the songwriting, he had that voice. There's not too many people who had that many options with their voice. He could inhabit a lot of different characters with that voice."

Ament was among Cornell's grunge peers to provide a eulogy at the singer's private memorial service in Los Angeles.

"I feel so lucky I got to be in a project with him and got to hang out with him and just witness his greatness," Ament told the podcast.

While Pearl Jam haven't released an official statement regarding Cornell's death, the individual members have paid tribute to the singer in their own ways: Eddie Vedder's recent solo concerts illuminated the grief his friends are feeling following Cornell's death, while Mike McCready told the Seattle Times, "Chris Cornell painted in song the darkness and beauty of life in Seattle. Chris means a lot to me today, as he trusted me to play on Temple [of the Dog]. He handed me a dream in getting to actually play on beautiful songs."

Pearl Jam and Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron also said in a Facebook post, "My dark knight is gone."

I think I might be down with Jeff's assessment of CC. He was a top notch songwriter, his wordsmithing was just super highly skillful, especially on top of some tricky Soundgarden music. I think his greatest strength was how he phrased his lyrics and how insightful they are. Vocally, he was obviously a massive talent, but I always found it to be of that 80s rock and metal mold. Great, one of the best at that particular type of singing, but nothing new. So, I thought he was underrated as a songwriter cause he was such a strong vocalist, but I think his real strength was the songwriting and lyrics, and his vocals just added the icing on the cake. It was always Ed's vocals that hit the nerve for me, something that turned rock vocals on it's head with how distinctive and emotive it all is, where you have a guy who could sing the phone book and it still sounds like something you want to hear. Lyrically, he's really good too but Cornell was just at a super high level, I believe. Hendrix was to me the obviously greatest guitarist ever by a longshot for me, but his songwriting was just okay.

Chris Cornell's Widow: 'Several Unanswered Questions' About Singer's Suicide
Vicky Cornell asks for release of toxicology report following husband's death

Two weeks after being "hopeful that further medical reports will provide additional details" about Chris Cornell's death, the musician's widow Vicky claims in a new statement that she is "mystified that the medical examiner announced a cause of death when the full autopsy report has not been completed."

Kirk Pasich, Vicky Cornell's attorney, claims that a Freedom of Information Act request for "reports relating to Chris Cornell's death" was denied by the City of Detroit Law Department.

"Based on information provided by personnel from the City of Detroit Police Department (DPD) Homicide Section, it is our understanding that this matter is an open investigation," Pasich claims the reply stated. "As such they believe that the release of any information at this time, including the records identified in your request, would compromise and/or interfere with their investigation."

Last month, following the singer's death at age 52, Vicky claimed that Cornell had taken anxiety medication Ativan the night he took his own life and questioned if the medication had contributed to his death.

"When we spoke after the show, I noticed he was slurring his words; he was different," she wrote. "When he told me he may have taken an extra Ativan or two, I contacted security and asked that they check on him. What happened is inexplicable and I am hopeful that further medical reports will provide additional details. I know that he loved our children and he would not hurt them by intentionally taking his own life."

Pasich reiterated Vicky Cornell's statement at the time, claiming that the release of a complete toxicology report was necessary for Cornell's death to be fully investigated. "Without the results of toxicology tests, we do not know what was going on with Chris — or if any substances contributed to his demise," he said. "Chris, a recovering addict, had a prescription for Ativan and may have taken more Ativan than recommended dosages. The family believes that if Chris took his life, he did not know what he was doing, and that drugs or other substances may have affected his actions."

In the new statement, Pasich asserts that Vicky Cornell had not viewed any police or toxicology reports pertaining to Cornell's death. While the City of Detroit has declined to release the police report, citing an "open investigation," a leaked copy, obtained by the Detroit News, notes that Cornell's bodyguard Martin Kirsten said he accompanied the singer to his hotel room to help fix his computer and give him two Ativan "which victim takes for anxiety," according to the report.

Soon after, Cornell and Vicky spoke on the phone, with the singer, according to the police report, slurring his words, admitting he may have taken too much Ativan and repeatedly saying "I am just tired" before abruptly hanging up. (Cornell disputed the police report's claim regarding her husband's last words to her on Twitter.)

Following that conversation, Vicky Cornell called Kirsten to check on her husband. After kicking open Cornell's hotel door and bedroom door, Kirsten found Cornell "laying on the bathroom floor" with blood running down his mouth and a red exercise band around his neck. A doctor pronounced Cornell dead at 1:30 a.m.

Cornell penned an open letter to her husband last month following his death, writing, in part, "We had the time of our lives in the last decade and I'm sorry, my sweet love, that I did not see what happened to you that night. I'm sorry you were alone, and I know that was not you, my sweet Christopher. Your children know that too, so you can rest in peace."

Detroit police have not revealed when Cornell's toxicology report will be released. "We are grateful for the outpouring of support as we mourn Chris' passing, but we still have several unanswered questions about what led to his death," Vicky Cornell added in the new statement. "We believe the toxicology report will answer these questions."

Vicky Cornell, the late star’s widow, said, “We are grateful for the outpouring of support as we mourn Chris’ passing, but we still have several unanswered questions about what led to his death. We believe the toxicology report will answer these questions.”
