Re: Twin Peaks [2017]
I'm just 3 episodes in but I'm having a hard time staying engaged. I'm intrigued however the over the top acting and dopey music take me out of it. I mean, the music is really bad for this show, especially when that cute gal that looks like she's from the 1960s appears. Maybe as I watch more I'll understand what Lynch was going for, but as of right now it takes me out of it. The music just does not fit with what is happening. They're talking murder and playing cool daddy jazz; it's just odd. The acting isn't terrible, it just reminds me of more theater than tv and as with the music, breaks my concentration from the show. I'm going to continue to watch it but it's on shaky ground right now.

Still processing last night's episode, but I loved the music in the Roadhouse scene. You can listen to it here:

From the AV Club review, I learned the name of the creep-o from that scene (it's in the credits):durdencommatyler wrote:That song! And as a backdrop to that super awful and uncomfortable scene... FUCK! I mean...

There are already pre-orders for the soundtrack. This is already shaping up to be my all-time favorite.

Re: Twin Peaks [2017]
Tried to watch the most recent episode early early yesterday morning after closing down the bar, inventory and books for the week. I just wasn't mentally into it.
Finished it full steam ahead just a few minutes ago. This one's really going to stick with me for a bit. My favorite episode of the season so far, but like ST, I'm still processing everything I just felt.
Few things while it's fresh on my mind
-Dr. Amp's YouTube venture seems to be this go-round's Invitation to Love. How appropriate for 2017.
-I'm starting to unpack whatever the hell is going on in Rancho Rosa and Dougie's world in general. Dougie's car is white, the hitmen's car is red, and the would-be car thieves drive a black car. There's definitely some Black Lodge/White Lodge symbolism happening, but I can't get the shape of it quite yet. "Rancho Rosa" (Rose Ranch) fits in there somewhere too, I'm sure.
-Loved the scene where Frank is embarrassed by how much he likes his green tea latté.

Re: Twin Peaks [2017]
Still thinking about that Rancho Rosa scene with the cars. The symbolism of a white vehicle accidentally getting destroyed by an object placed by occupants of a red vehicle while occupants of a black vehicle try to take possession of it don't make me feel good about Cooper's soul. Not one bit.
My goodness, the music in this episode! Both Angelo's score and the outside tracks. You guys have already covered "Snake Eyes," but please allow me to join all of you in fawning over that performance. Such violent sax & guitar, such a steady, churning rhythm. Becky's scene (you guys know exactly what I'm talking about) was perfect, too. As much as I liked those two songs, I liked the score that opened and closed this episode even more. Cooper-as-Dougie breaks my heart. Those credits broke my heart.

Re: Twin Peaks [2017]
There are so many echoes happening with this story. I stumbled on this clip from Missing Pieces a few minutes ago and now I can't sleep. Becky's scene last night in Part 5 was a new way of looking at this recurring theme of possession and darkness for this show and it mirrors this Laura/Bob scene in some pretty disturbing ways.
This is how Twin Peaks keeps me up at night.

So I liked episode 4 better than 3, but I'm still not sure what I think of this series. Re: the music... I was a bit too harsh earlier as some of it, like the theme song is really cool. I still don't like the music played during Audrey's scenes; it's dopey and doesn't seem to fit at all with what is going on.

Reid, I'd never seen that Missing Piece before. And it scared the shit out of me. It's morning. Broad daylight. I'm in public. At a work computer. And I damn near lost my breath. My heart is racing. Holy shit, this guy! This fucking Lynch is a goddamn madman!

Re: Twin Peaks [2017]
Though I see Becky and Laura reacting very differently, I do like the parallel of an external force/darkness causing the reaction. Obviously there are parallels in how they are shot (and even lit to a degree). But one is beautiful and haunting and sad. The other is terrifying and desperate and awful. But both are brought on by the influence of some kind of dark force (Bob/drugs). There's a lot to unpack there. And it certainly plays into the larger themes of Twin Peaks then and now, and Lynch's entire career. Once again, I'm reminded that this really is a culmination of all his work.

Re: Twin Peaks [2017]
My thoughts exactly. We've been talking a lot in this thread about how Lynch works and I thought those two clips were great examples of showing the same theme through two very different emotions. I also figured that you and a lot of other people probably hadn't seen that clip before so I wanted to scare the shit out of you all.durdencommatyler wrote:Though I see Becky and Laura reacting very differently, I do like the parallel of an external force/darkness causing the reaction. I've long thought about BOB as a personification of any dark force that has the potential to consume us. Very much in step with the phrase "fire, walk with me." Drugs and toxic relationships, being another favorite theme in this series, have wreaked just as much havoc on the souls of this town. What I love about the way this concept is presented in Twin Peaks is that this is not a morality tale. It's an experience. A haunting reminder of the darkness in your own life that you keep coming back to in your day when you're stuck in traffic, or walking your dog, or zoning out during a boring conversation with someone at work.
Why do we enjoy this stuff? Are we drawn to these Lynchian nightmares so as to keep our mental demons close, or do the dark depths of our minds simply gravitate towards a kindred spirit in BOB?

If it's not your bag, don't force it. I find her music to be retro with this bizarre mixture of playfulness and sex that fits her character well, but I don't think that you're wrong in thinking that in the strictest sense the music on this show is odd and off.darth_vedder wrote:So I liked episode 4 better than 3, but I'm still not sure what I think of this series. Exactly. It's the fact that it's off and odd that make it so compelling. These are clues to be followed. I like the show, just having trouble really getting into it. I'm curious about the new season so I think I'll stick with it for now.
