I certainly think she has a strong business mind and absolutely knows how to put on a fucking show. But she's a pure artist through and through. Some of her music isn't for me, for sure. She has songs that I'd be okay never hearing again. But so does just about every artist. She's just amazing.

I will say I lost interest in her after ARTPOP. I don't like what she's been doing since. She seems like she's gotten really...serious. And that killer electro edge is gone.

Yeah, I certainly haven't kept up with her most recent stuff either. But I do like the things I've heard.

Was a big surprise and a delight to learn that a new generation is getting introduced to both.”

The typically soft-spoken Weymouth, who usually lets her bass-playing do the talking, was more succinct. “It’s good to be appreciated.”

Listen to that Selena Gomez tune. It's not necessarily catchy, but it's nice. I don't know if it will get stuck in your head, but it's worth a shot.

For Strat: I listened to 22, A Million recently for the first time in months. I didn't get it before, hearing it as some cool experimental tracks mixed in among a bunch of regular songs. This time I understood the album progression.

So I've always liked noisy things like Sonic Youth, Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine etc, but my tastes usually veer towards melodic things, "experimental" things, folky things, rhythm and soul, blah blah. In short: not metal or hard rock.

The older I get, the more I find myself gravitating towards hard, heavy and sludgy things that I would have hated when I was younger. Right now I'm listening to The Sword and loving it. Sleep has been in heavy rotation this past year. Melvins, Jesus Lizard...

Anyone else have the experience of getting into heavier music the older they get? I would have thought it was the other way around, but maybe the grass is always greener?

I've come to love Sleep, Endless Boogie, Jesus Lizard, Shellac, and other bands like that as I've gotten older, though I think it has more to do with their simplicity/minimalism more than it does their being heavy. I've always liked heavy music, but when I was younger it was more about the riffs or crazy drum patterns. Now I get super excited by the repeating motifs and the silences between; it's what makes Shellac feel so uniquely brutal and dark to me. It's even better when funny or irreverent lyrics subvert the whole thing.

I'm into all this, though this is the first time I've asked myself what exactly I like about this stuff.

I guess the more we listen to and think about music, the more open we are to trying new things and not thinking about the stigma attached to them.
