5.4 miles in 48.5 minutes. Yikes. Furthest distance yet but worst pace in a month. Disappointing. Although the wind was against me for the first half and it was blowing insane.

Re: The Running Thread
You added new stress (distance), so you pace should be slower. Don't be discouraged. Now you and your body know you can go 5.4 miles. Knowing you've been here before is huge. I'm convinced it's the main reason the last 6 miles of a marathon are so hard. Most programs have long runs of 20, so the last 6 miles feel like no man's land.Dev wrote:5.4 miles in 48.5 minutes. Re: The Running Thread
I hate night running. The main reason is because I've been eating all day and I don't run well with a full belly. I also have a pretty tight ass too, so I'm a little afraid of being raped.verb_to_trust wrote:It's hot as fuck. Will run under the cover of darkness tonight.

Re: The Running Thread
For me the problem with running at night is the danger. I like to run on the path and as much as possible I run on the grass beside the path because it's easier on me. At night it get's tough because you could trip on something and have to put so much effort into watching the ground.

Officially signed-up for a 12-hour race on September 2.
I guess I should start training.

What do you mean? You just go as far as you can in 12 hours or you anticipate the distance taking you 12 hours?run2death wrote:Officially signed-up for a 12-hour race on September 2.

Well, after last week's 21 and 5 days of rest, I banged out 56 miles this week. On the one hand, I'm thrilled with the number and the fact that I'm not broken; on the flip side, very few fast or marathon pace miles. I was hoping to run all 8 of my miles today at marathon pace. I managed the first 2 and the last 1, but the 5 in the middle were pretty bad.
Hoping for 60 next week, but with my wife going out of town, I'm afraid I'm going to be on the treadmill quite a bit since the kids can't be home alone.

Run as far as you can in 12 hours.
Timed events are casual and fun. I always recommend them to people new to ultras. It's a good way to run your goal mileage (typically 50 or 100 miles) without the pressure of a true "race" atmosphere. They are typically on loop courses, so race logistics are also super easy.

Good job working through some difficulty Daft. I remain amazed at the miles you log to train.

Re: The Running Thread
Running further is waaaaay easier than running faster.
I trained for a 100 and to PR at the half marathon this year and can tell you I'd much rather do a 30-mile training run than 10 miles at HMP.

Re: The Running Thread
When people go on really long runs like that what is considered an average pace? You are probably pretty competitive and faster than most. I'm talking an average Joe at that distance.

Re: The Running Thread
Judging from some of the "Average Joes" I follow on Strava about 10-minute miles for a 50K/~30-mile training run on the road. Anywhere up to 14- to 16-minute miles on trails.
My first ultra was a 50K on a relatively flat and well-groomed trail and I averaged about 11-minute miles.

Re: The Running Thread
Ran after work. Humidity and heat were again a problem. I did hills for 5 miles at a 7:40 pace. Didn't feel great at all. This morning on the way to work I saw a guy I know who is 37 or so running. He played college sports and keeps in great shape. It was probably a shorter run but man he looked comfortable. I'd like to start getting morning runs in but I am lazy and I feel a little wiped from running the night before so it's a vicious cycle.

Just ate a double cheeseburger. I was looking at some tour dates on Joseph Arthur's website and somehow ended up on his IG. He's into boxing now and shredded af. I feel.... inadequate.

Re: The Running Thread
I ran this morning after drinking 3 double IPAs, 3 screwdrivers and a white Russian last night.
Went out for 10 and actually felt decent, but then at 7 miles, stopped and puked my guts out for 5 minutes.
Walked home, took a 2-hour nap and now I feel great.

Re: The Running Thread
Did speed work at the track. 8 tomorrow and then the plan I'm following has a 16 mile long run next week. That will be uncharted territory.
