Meh. Why? Because she forgot about the Color Purple? Her point is still valid even if the math is off.
And The Sugarland Express. And Always. And The BFG.

But that's beside the point. It's just insanely depressing to me that THIS is her takeaway from arguably the greatest filmography by anyone ever. How could anyone look at the films of Spielberg and have their mind go right to problematic gender politics? Is she even human?! Film discussion has become an artless hellscape in which petty, revisionist political point-making is more important than artistry or insight.

Geez, it feels more like a small aside in the middle of an acceptance speech (for a "women in film" event) rather than an attempt to accurately and thoroughly assess the totality of the man's filmography from a philosophical standpoint. It hardly merits headline status in the first place, let alone this kind of scrutiny. Yeah, she got the facts wrong, but her overall point is about exposure, opportunity and motivation for female filmmakers, not a diss on master Spielberg's speckless career.

There is plenty of actual misogyny to address in the movie industry. "Calling out" Spielberg, a man born in 1946 who has given the world a wealth of beautiful, humane art, is absurd, misguided, meaningless nonsense.

I watched Fury Road last night. Tom Hardy's facial expressions are top notch in that movie.

I don't think she's talking about (or accusing him of) misogyny. From what I'm reading, she seems to be saying that she's been a lifelong Spielberg fan, but male directors tend to make male-centric stories, which in turn influences the next generation of filmmakers, and the cycle continues; if women want representation, they should be encouraged to get in the ring and make their movies too. An "if you can see it you can be it" kind of thing.

yeah i agree with LV. And to call out Spielberg, when he had bold female characters, is pretty stupid. Did she saw ET? Karen Allen in Indy?

I think you're making her sound way more measured and nuanced than she was. She began with a factually incorrect assertion, and then used the combative rhetoric that she "has to call him out." It's a vapid point to make.

If you read the transcript of her speech and not just the headline-grabbing Spielberg "call-out", it's super clear that that's what she's saying.

I don't know where you're getting that from. The full version is even worse.
someone from the audience yelled out “The Color Purple!” Banks, corrected herself and said, “Okay, The Color Purple, okay, I’m wrong. Ummmmm … he directed?” Someone in the crowd then yelled out, “No!” so Banks said, “Oh, so I’m right still.”
Jesus fucking Christ. She doesn't even know what movies he directed.

Hey LV, your reaction on Facebook to my comment, does that mean you think it was gay?

You're still stuck on the Spielberg bit. She goes on to talk about being wowed by the films that influenced her, the importance of representation in film and her growing frustration at the lack thereof.
