The Black Angels - Indigo Meadow (April 2nd)

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

saw these guys last night for the first time at the 9:30 club in DC and i gotta say it was a very underwhelming show. The band was more out of sync than in and the sound wasn't mixed well at all. The best member of the band at his craft seems to be the lead guitarist (far left) who mixed his some cool guitar effects and distortions but his guitar was turned down compared to the rhythm guitarist(s).

For those of you that have seen this band before, are they kinda boring/one dimensional live?

I was also at the 930 last night and they were somewhat off on a few songs, but some were nice and tight, particularly the new stuff. Surprisingly I actually thought the new stuff sounded the best. Half Believing, Commache Moon, Hunt Me Down, Currency all kicked ass, old hits like Black Grease, Young Men Dead, I Hear Colors sounded...weird, it's like they slowed them down too much. Hard to describe, but it did strike me as odd. I would go check them out again though, they were definitely memorable.

i've seen them a bunch over the years and while i haven't ever walked away with a 'best show evar!!1' opinion, they've never disappointed me. they aren't exactly known for exciting, up and down tempo shows, rather they got that plodding drone thing going on in most of their songs, so yeah i see how someone could think it's boring/one-dimensional in a live setting, especially since they're also not exactly the most engaging with their stage presence. i assume they had some visual stuff going on that was more often than not the most interesting thing to look at?

christian bland is the lead guitarist and, yeah, i like what he does. he's got some solo records that are even further steeped in the old late 60s psychedelic vibes. none are anywhere as good as the band records, though, imo.

Their latest LP, Death Song, has grown on me tremendously in the last few weeks. Possibly reaching #2 for me right behind Passover.

well, since this got bumped i might as well post my favorite black angels related thing of the past few years, alex maas' solo levitation session released in early 2021.

his great solo album, luca, had come out a few months before, so most songs are from that, with a couple other tracks of his, and no black angels songs.
