RETIRED - The all inclusive video game thread

I tried to play a PC game from 2010 yesterday and I thought it was old enough my system could handle it. Nope. Between the screen tearing and the general blurriness of the backgrounds I kept crashing into everything (it was a driving game). Is there an easy way to tell what kind of graphics card will work in my PC without buying one and hoping for the best? I know there are power considerations and other things to look out for but I'm going into this from not having built a PC since 2005 or so.

I have a Dell (dude) and even that's a block I'm unsure about. Can I put something in it and have it work?

Head to https://pcpartpicker.com/ and build your system there - it's got compatibility checks. The Geforce 750ti is a great card for older systems that'll handle most stuff today at reduced quality.

What're your CPU, RAM, motherboard? If your motherboard is old enough, it might be old PCI specs, which would limit the GPU you could get.

Bought the PC the weekend the first TFA trailer was released. I remember because that's the first thing we watched on it! So it's about 2.5 years old, give or take.

Nah, you have to enter what you've got. On Windows use run - dxdiag, or download something like cpuid to figure out what's in there. The 750 ti that I mentioned was released in 2014, and would've been based on tech from 2013, so possibly a good fit. Or you may need a bit more ram or something.

Any of you guys have opinions about the new Tomb Raider reboot games?

If you enjoy Uncharted, definitely get the latest TR definitive edition. Graphics are top notch and gameplay is consistently fun. Voice acting and story definitely not in the same league as Uncharted but not bad at all.

Yeah, it's fun. I wasn't as impressed with the second one as many seem to be but it was a solid B or B+.

I'm blasting through the story mode pretty quickly, working through the Libertalia sections now. Holy fuck those two chapters in Madagascar were incredible! 4x4ing around in the mud was so much fun...and that chase scene...damn!

It is really fun. I haven't played it in awhile, but it is top notch.

I finished up the main story yesterday so i jumped into a couple rounds of multiplayer. Maybe i'm just outclassed or not used to a 3rd person MP game yet, but i didn't find it all that great. I did a few matches of survivor until i got to a point where my team couldn't progress any further, and then i did a few matches of the warmup deathmatch. Had trouble connecting to matches that would last more than a round and when i did i was pretty outmatched by people that clearly weren't newbies. Is there a level cap on that warmup deathmatch?

I don't think the warmup deathmatch is even an option after the first few. Bada or eye could show you the ropes some day if you want.

More “Uncharted” Games In The Works?

Though “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” served as the end of Nathan Drake’s adventuring, Naughty Dog isn’t done with the famed PlayStation video game franchise just yet.

This Summer sees the release of “Uncharted: The Lost Legacy,” what was a DLC pack for the fourth game that has evolved into something much more – a smaller scale spin-off title which is being dubbed a full game but won’t cost as much (and will be free for certain “Uncharted 4” edition buyers).

The story focuses on two fan-favorite characters from previous games in the series – Nadine Ross and Chloe Frazer who partner together for an adventure in India.

Speaking with Eurogamer, the game’s creative director Shaun Escayg is quick to stress this is far from the end of the franchise. He says the Naughty Dog is team is very invested in keeping the world alive, to tell more stories from what they have setup, and maybe one day offering an open world “Uncharted” game:

“This thieving world is huge. There’s so many characters. Even before we settled on this particular story we were exploring Sullivan, we were exploring Cutter, and pairing each other up, thinking what would be right, what would have conflict, growth, something new, something fresh. And Chloe was the one that kept jumping out. But to say the Uncharted world is done… I doubt that highly.

The future is uncertain there – we’re always testing it. There’s a segment in Lost Legacy similar to [Uncharted 4’s] Madagascar where you can choose to explore and see different areas at different times, experience it differently. When we find a way to do things in an open world I think we’ll definitely venture there at some point.”

“Uncharted: The Lost Legacy” launches on August 22nd.

I've always taken their previous statements as saying they were done with the Nathan Drake story, not the world.

I'm really enjoying Horizon Zero Dawn. It's reminiscent of the Last of Us and Uncharted story and play style, but in an open world. Looks like it'll suck me in for quite a while.

the PS Store is having a konami sale this week so i finally pulled the trigger on Metal Gear Solid V for $13...my fuck the first 2 hours of the game were basically a playable cutscene. i "played" it while i made and then ate supper. It's a good thing i had something to keep me busy while playing my video game . Anyways i'm finally on the ground in Afghanistan and the game seems to be back on track but man, i hope there aren't too many more of those bullshit cutscenes or this may be a tough one to get through.

Haha oh yeah, i'm very familiar with MGS's gratuitous use of cutscenes. MGS4 was pretty bad...i'd come home from work and have an hour to play and find myself watching a 45 minute cutscene. Which, you know, would be ok if they weren't all such long-winded trainwrecks of bad dialogue and stupid camera angles . Anyways i'll see how this one shakes out. Glad to hear it gets better. I spent about an hour scuttling through the desert stealth killing russian motherfuckers and that was pretty cool. If Kojima can keep the rest of the cutscenes more reasonable i'll consider it a win.

I got RetroPie set up on my Raspberry Pi 3. Plays everything from MAME to PS2/GameCube pretty flawlessly.

Finding ROMs and setting them up perfectly is actually kind of fun (and cheap) hobby.
