Re: The Running Thread
Yup. But Western States takes place in Cali's Sierra Nevada Mountain range.
Also, AZ isn't all desert. Northern AZ is one of the coldest places in the U.S. Flagstaff is actually colder than upstate NY.

Re: The Running Thread
"Yassos" are 800M (twice around a track) repeats.
Named after Bart Yasso, who would do 800s as a marathon predictor. Theory is you do at least 10 800M repeats, average them out and that's your marathon finishing time in MN:SEC instead of HR:MIN.
In other words, if an elite does 800s in 2 minutes, 15 seconds, then he can expect to finish the full mary in 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Re: The Running Thread
After lots of stretching, did 4 pain-free miles last night on the treadmill in the new shoes and Superfeet. Feeling cautiously optimistic about the 10k race tomorrow.
That was my first treadmill run in probably 10 years. How do people do that? The seconds just crawled by.

My arms are pretty skinny. My stomach isn't as flat as it used to be though. Which reminds me, I think I will eat about 1500 calories in chicken wings tonight before taking my sister the movies for her birthday.Dev wrote:this bro is super skinny. jesus.

Re: The Running Thread
Yeah, there's a growing belief in the community that ultra runners should carry more body fat than XCers, marathoners and track dudes.Dev wrote:this bro is super skinny. jesus.
And Walmsley himself is famous for pounding multiple pizzas and several beers almost every night, but the reality is that it's just hard to maintain body fat when you're running 140 miles a week.

No. There's an elite ultra runner who eats nothing but Krispy Kremes in races.Dev wrote:sometimes i eat some croissants before i go running. is that dumb?

Re: The Running Thread
Ran my 13 mile route at the park today. No problem at all and 4 minutes faster than last time. Next week I think I will shoot for 15.

Re: The Running Thread
Ryan Sandes from South Africa. The same thing has happened the last two years, Jim Walmsley (the dude in the vid I posted above) smokes the field for 80 miles then completely blows up.
This year the course was brutal. Snow and slush in the early miles, then 100+ degrees on the exposed sections in the middle and end.

Re: The Running Thread
The last 6 months have been shitty. Shin splints have plagued me relentlessly. New shoes and compression gear, and winding back the training and type of workouts have helped somewhat. But a couple of deep tissue massages have helped pinpoint the main issues appear to be tight glut, quad and calf muscles. Plus some core instability.
Now I'm trying to stretch without over-stretching, and trying to use correct techniques. I failed initially by over-stretching my hamstrings, and causing pain behind the knee. Core exercises are also required, so I'm dusting off the medicine ball and bosu ball.
r2d, do you have a regular stretching and/or core routine?
