When did you get into Steely Dan?

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Royal Scam or Countdown to Ecstasy is my favorite.

I'm starting to lean towards Countdown. Listened to it again while doing housework. Fucking solid. Not a huge fan of Pearl of the Quarter, but none of them are duds.

Some of the shows I've been listening to have Old School going right in to King of the World. They flowed really nicely. Would've been great sequencing on the album.

You left out Your Gold Teeth, too. Rag thru School IS a great fucking run.

And KotW is the best Dan song ever.

You overrating the deep cuts against the undeniable classics, bro. I would put king of the world at number four on that album. great song but not classic like the ones I mentioned.

I like KOTW more than My Old School or The Boston Rag. Maybe not Show Biz Kids, though.

I like all those, but not more than KOTW.

It's ok to have different favorites, Dev.

Larry Carlton is gonna play guitar for them for these 4 big festival shows coming up. Their regular guitarist has conflicting dates.

Wish Skunk or Dias could be there, too.

Skunk and McDonald would make sense seeing as how the Doobies are playing the shows, too.

Man, Countdown to Ecstasy is also insanely good. The first seven albums are pretty much all masterpieces. I gotta delve into those last two.

This could change at any moment since these are all so great, but if I had to try ranking...

1. Gaucho
2. The Royal Scam
3. Aja
4. Katy Lied
5. Countdown to Ecstasy
6. Can't Buy a Thrill
7. Pretzel Logic

Seriously though, you can't go wrong with any of them.

You really can't.

After much contemplation, I gotta name Countdown as my favorite. I just keep going back and liking it more and more every time. Pretzel Logic is hitting me that way too.

The only thing holding me back on those two is they have some weak points. I don't love "Bodhisattva" or "Pearl of the Quarter", and I don't know why "St. Louis Toodle-oo" exists.

Agreed on Pearl. It's ok, but definitely the weakest track on the album. I like Bodhisattva pretty well. They really opened up the solo spaces when they played it live and that has given me a new appreciation of it. Not really sure why they covered St Louis. Maybe to show off their Ellington influence? It's not bad, just out of place. Skunk is awesome on it tho.

It's amazing how many layers and details a careful headphones listen will yield. "Daddy Don't Live in That New York City No More" might seem a bit static and lightweight on the surface, but headphones reveal how dynamic that song is. Every line seems to be sung differently, with production effects enhancing the vocals in just the right places, and subtle instrumentation changes constantly keep the song moving and evolving. I marvel at this band endlessly.
