The pair were changing Star Wars veteran Lawrence Kasdan's script on the fly when they'd already had input and signed off on it, says a damning Monday report from THR. They began filming surprisingly late in the day. They refused to give any ground to Kasdan, even when he flew to London for a crisis meeting. They'd been asked for 12-15 camera angles in a given scene; they provided three.
And after seeing scenes Lord and Miller shot with the movie's star, Alden Ehrenreich, Lucasfilm took the unusual step of hiring an on-set acting coach for its young Han Solo.

This makes me even more firmly on Lord & Miller's side. Changing the script during shooting is, like, the most common thing in the entire universe. I don't know why they're making that sound like some huge sin.Strat wrote:http://mashable.com/2017/06/26/han-solo-lord-miller.amp

Some...okay probably all of the best lines and the scenes that had some of the best character interaction from the original trilogy were the moments that went off script. It sounds like Kasdan has become a classic, crotchety old man that is a huge pain in the ass and freaked the hell out when the directors went off his perfect script. Also reads like Kasdan has a ton of influence over at Disney.

It sounds to me like L&M were making a different film than they were hired to make. It's fine to change the script and improvise when the director is the writer. Or when the project is a passion project. But this is a contained film with dedicated continuity and strict canon. For better or worse, L&M were hired hands. Of course, Lucasfilm and Disney wanted their aesthetic, their vibe. But that's different than changing the story: a story that was not theirs to change.jwfocker wrote:LoathedVermin72 wrote:This makes me even more firmly on Lord & Miller's side. Have you guys listened to The Director's Cut Podcast with Gareth Edwards? I honestly wonder how much of what he said fueled L&M's private little "rebellion." The whole time I was listening to it, I kept thinking, "oh, yeah, well no wonder." It sounds like Disney gave Gareth a lot of room to create and breathe. Which leads me to believe that L&M are just being petulant brats.
Changing the script isn't a sin. But completely revamping the concept, altering the story in monumental ways, and turning Han Solo into Ace Venture, sure sounds like bad film-making to me.

Sounds like a load of corporate apologia to me. Disney is obsessed with protecting their soulless brand from any offbeat personality and we're defending that? The era of the filmmaker is truly dying.

Re: Star Wars: Han Solo (5/25/2018)
In many cases, I'd agree with you. But Star Wars is a brand. That doesn't mean there isn't room within to play. And I'm sure Disney welcomes that to a degree. But Star Wars is a franchise with it's own built in canon. It is genuinely something different from other franchises. I don't think they want to protect Star Wars from personality at all. That's not what I'm getting from this.

I don't know why we're defending this idea of Star Wars being a precious brand in the first place though. Why give that kind of corporate fanboy mentality the time of day? Who cares? All I care about is whether the work of art is good. The fact that we live in a culture that places importance on how well it fits into the "Star Wars canon" is what's depressing. The fact that we live in a culture that's siding with with nostalgic, corporate interests over artists is depressing.

Yeah I get Disney protecting their business interests. But I also hate Disney and don't care about their business interests at all.

Star Wars is not going to go anywhere interesting. And I'd hardly even consider myself a fan at this point. I don't care if they make more.
