Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I'm not really a fan of Clint Eastwood in general. As a director, but even moreso as an actor. Gene Hackman's a'ight, though.

If I'm not mistaken it's one of Hackman's last films. He and Clint are absolutely brilliant in it. As is Morgan Freeman. God damn. Now I want to watch it again.

The obsession with/romanticism of the "the west" is one of the mostly baffling aspects of the American culture.

The modern west presents terrific and rare opportunity for anyone willing to work a little harder to get ahead. Plus there's none of the hyper-intellectualism of the NE or PacNW, nor the traffic or over-abundance of built environment. People who are able to think easily outside of the predominant right/left schism. Plus there's amazing whiskey and a surprising amount of strong, independent women. It's a dream-state realized for people like me.

None of that is at all what I'm talking about though. You think Sam Shepherd had any of that in mind when he wrote a play?

Sort of, yes. The landscape is still rugged, the weather is intense, and it takes a certain personality to endure those things. Not trying to compare myself to homesteaders or anything, but his themes are still alive and well.

I'm not sure I buy that any of those things were worse for homesteaders out west than they were for the original settlers in the east. The challenges would have been different, sure. But worse?

But maybe you're right. I still don't understand it, though. It's just so much unearned romanticism. But who am I to judge? I love romance. Just because I don't find "the west" and "being tough" and "storms are big" and "LAND" and as romantic as city the Brooklyn Bridge or the sunset in Barcelona or any of that other bullshit doesn't mean it's worthless or that I'm right and others are wrong. I just don't get it.

It's loosely based on a true story, and revolves around a murder investigation and the KKK. Maybe they could have done something to include a wider range of actors, but it would probably have been a different movie,
