I Wonder ... a Tribute to Blind Melon
I fell in love with this group about 8 years ago when I moved out of my small town and onto my own. Now, I come back to them about every 6 months or so and just dive in full force. There's not a lot of material due to the untimely death of Shannon but what's there is remarkably good. These guys could let 'er fucking rip live. They were pretty great at playing to their strengths in their songwriting as well. I know the band has put out a record or maybe even two in the last few years with a new singer, but I haven't brought myself to listen to them, and I don't know if I ever will. Sure, a band is so much more than their singer/front person, and Blind Melon is a very gifted group of musicians, but Shannon Hoon had a way of grabbing ahold of a song, or a crowd, and holding them in the palm of his hand, and the part of me that loves Blind Melon belongs to him. I would have loved to hear what they would have done had he not succumbed to the pressure of his addiction.
This video I'm sharing is a performance in Toronto about a month before they found Shannon dead in the tour bus. It's my favorite thing Blind Melon. Enjoy!

Shannon Hoon was a great talent. Taken away too soon, like many others.

One of my absolute favourite groups, so many great songs. Can't help but think their next album may have been something really special, as they had carved out a niche with "soup" they were shit hot musicians with a hippie shamen in Shannon giving unique melodies and fantastic lyrics.
Can't wait for that doco of all Shannon's super 8 footage to come out. The last thing we really had new was that album of demos leaked by Shannon's family some years ago.
I really wish Shannon had pulled through.

I get so irritated when I hear fuckwads pin this band as a one hit wonder. The self-titled album is close to flawless all the way through. And yeah Soup is great, too.

I'm not sure they would have gotten to make another album if he lived. I don't think the record company was happy with them. They prob would have faded away into obscurity like Living Colour.

Related to Axl Rose.tragabigzanda wrote:Can someone give me the elevator version of how Hoon came to be on Use Your Illusion, and what his music career looked like between then and Blind Melon's big break?

Re: I Wonder ... a Tribute to Blind Melon
Rumor has it that Hoon bought the cocaine that killed him in New Orleans at a night club in Houston called Numbers. Numbers is still there, right next to a place I often get margaritas and tacos. It's not uncommon for the younger generation to mistakenly call the club "hashtags" since their marquee has a pound sign denoting the club's name. RIP Shannon Hoon.

I was wrong... per Wikipedia:PHATJ wrote:I don't for sure remember the relation, cousins I think.tragabigzanda wrote:Crazy, had no idea.PHATJ wrote:Related to Axl Rose.tragabigzanda wrote:Can someone give me the elevator version of how Hoon came to be on Use Your Illusion, and what his music career looked like between then and Blind Melon's big break?
In Los Angeles, Hoon befriended his sister Anna's high school friend, Axl Rose. Rose invited Hoon to join him in the studio, where his band Guns N' Roses were recording their albums Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II (both released in 1991). Hoon sang backing vocals on several of the tracks, including "The Garden" and "Don't Cry." Rose also invited Hoon to appear in the video for "Don't Cry."
