I love that movie, which is why I was first excited to see them show up as directors, but after thinking on it I am not so sure that hyper kinetic and self aware style is what I want in this kind of movie.

They've never had to do a movie with such a large scale crew in their lives. We have reports that at least one shoot was done with only three or four setups when, normally on a film that size, there are 12 to 15. They couldn't handle the production schedule Lucasfilm put in place. They felt the schedule was too constraining. All this again, according to multiple reports. Seems pretty clear to me that they thought they knew what they were getting into. And when it was too big and too overwhelming, they went full comfort zone to try and make it work. And that's where things started to go wrong.
We've also seen reports from crew members who said they were just sitting around doing nothing for hours because L & M didn't understand how to manage a crew of that size. Which makes total sense to me because they've never been anywhere near a crew that size.
The big thing now is KK needs to really review the idea of taking up and coming directors to helm these films. I never really understood the thinking behind it other than to perhaps give a new fresh take on Star Wars. Or to get directors cheaply.
Back to the drawing board on that whole thing I'd say. That's 2/2 of the standalones that have wandered into disaster thanks to ill fitting directors and the project needing to be taken off them.
In those lights I can see Obi Wan is now not gonna happen until they find an established director for it.

But you're forgetting that Rogue One was great! I've found myself revisiting this a LOT more than The Force Awakens

Let's not get into that but point stands that a second director had to come in and rewrite and reshoot a lot of the story to put a shape on it. Edwards seemed to shoot endlessly and had too much footage yet lord and miller the opposite it seems.
You can't make a film on this scale by improv and just winging it. Both these standalones seem to have had directors that have tried that and it hasn't worked and been taken off them in both cases.

Acting coaches are on almost every big set. And even the biggest names have and use them just to bounce ideas off etc. Di caprio had one on Revenant for example.
The thinking is he was given a choice a bit to improve the comedic angle to it. And that was what he was uncomfortable with.
If the film had been released with them as directors and been a comedy. And had been awful?
Alden would be the one carrying the can for that and getting all the blame. Not the directors.
That's why I do believe he raised the first flag and sounds like he was right.

Again, I think that stems completely from L & M. All reports seem to indicate that Alden prepared well for the role. Then he got mixed signals from his director(s) who were trying to force the character into something far more meta and comedic than he'd prepared for. His head got screwed up. Took action and went to the producers with concerns. They brought in an acting coach. Things still weren't going well. Lord and Miller get fired. Ron Howard enters. Everything will be fine. Alden is back on track.
Disney and Lucasfilm know what's at stake here. Alden beat out thousands of other actors. If they didn't think he could do it, if there was any real doubt, he never would have gotten the job in the first place.
