Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Friends and I were talking about Memento again last night. Man, I need to watch that movie again. It's one of the best films of the last 20 years. The fact that one guy made Memento, The Prestige, Insomnia, The Dark Knight and Inception is fucking unreal. And Dunkirk looks to be another home run. Easily one of the most consistent, nuanced, and fascinating film makers of his generation.

Memento, The Dark Knight and The Prestige are impressive and fucking genre bending/defying. I know verm will want to kill me and everyone I care about for saying it but there you have it.

If any director made even one movie that contributed so powerfully to the landscape of cinema, I'd sing their praises. The fact that this asshole has three of them that is astounding to me. Personally, I'd throw Insomnia and Inception on top of those. They guy could never make another film and he'd be one of the most accomplished and powerful directors of his generation.

I'll never understand the love for The Prestige. That movie is obtuse and ridiculous, and the "twist" at the end was such a silly deus ex machina.

Yeah but Pfister's cinematography is nice and David Bowie is in it

It's becoming more and more clear to me that you either really hate subtlety or you are actually incapable of noticing it. Which is not to say that I disagree with you on this point. Like I said, I'm not sure if Nolan could pull of a full blown comedy. But the rest of this conversation and your observations of Nolan in the context of the things you seem to like and react positively to, has me thinking that you have no time and find now real value in subtle nuance.

But there's no rational explanation to be had. Unless I'm forgetting something important, it's basically "Oh by the way this one magician learned to clone himself and has been doing it for the last 90 minutes."
