Wiping out the principal ally of the Lannister's in the process, causing Tommen's suicide, and putting Cersci on the iron throne. That whole story arc was about Cersei, and reinforced and pushed even further both the strengths and weaknesses of her character going into the final act of the series.cutuphalfdead wrote:Until it didn't because they all died at once.Anders wrote:Can't agree on that. that was an excellent conclusion, especially as it became clear that, for the High Sparrow, this was still in the end ultimately all about politics rather than faith. And we keep underestimating the ruthlessness of the Lannisters. This was basically the Red Wedding V2.

Re: HBO: Game of Thrones (Song of Ice and Fire)
To me Cersei's story with the faith militant didn't really amount to much. It was a minor inconvenience for her and now she's removed her (local) enemies and can go back to being psycho queen again. Once again, the show-runners have removed consequences and real adversity from the story. If she had to face trial at least it might have knocked her down a peg, and forced her to face some reckoning even if she came out victorious, but nope, she just got them all in the same room and let the deus ex wildfirina take care of her problems.stip wrote:Wiping out the principal ally of the Lannister's in the process, causing Tommen's suicide, and putting Cersci on the iron throne. What's the point of creating Robert Strong if he doesn't get to stand for you in the trial by combat?

Also, she was already (practically) on the Iron Throne as Queen Regent. Getting Tommen out of the picture doesn't actually increase her power.

In fact, with Tommen out of the picture Stannis by rights gets to ascend the Iron Throne even without the incest.

It does weaken her claim and position, clearing the way for you know who (Daenarys).
