That's a fair question and I'm not 100% to be totally honest. I like Leia going back to into military service, "going back to what she knows." But I think the going back aspect is a little weak. I think Leia would have always been doing that stuff. It's in her blood. It's how she is to the marrow. Either way, I think "General Leia" fits the narrative well and doesn't feel like any kind of retcon to me. Again, I totally understand the choice and the justification for the "going back to what I always knew" but I also think it's the safest and easiest choice. It works just fine but I would have preferred something more interesting and less obvious.
I actually like that Hand and Leia separated. That makes so much sense given what happened with Ben. We see real life parallels to that all the time and it's a powerful plot point. But I think there was something they could have done with Han. Given who he was at the end of Jedi and the distance of those 30 years between, surely there was something more interesting for him in TFA. I'll have to think about what exactly I think that might be.
