Really enjoying the new one. Only song I don't really care for is Anxiety. Just goes on too long. Wish they would have taken that extra two minutes and given it to Cumberland Gap.

Looking forward to seeing him (with Mountain Goats!!) in St. Paul next weekend.

I think this might be Jason's best solo album so far. It's definitely right up there with Southeastern. I'd rank em:

Southeastern / The Nashville Sound...Mostly top shelf tunes, minimal skippers.

Self-Titled...Loose, electric, fuzzy, slightly unpredictable early Isbell. Hard to believe the same guy made this.

Here We Rest...Side A is great, Side B not so much.

Sirens of the Ditch...Several great songs that were mainstays of his live show for the pre-Alabama Pines years, just doesn't really hang together as an album.

Something More Than Free...I don't know if it's the cover, or the production, or the songs themselves, but something about this album just bores me to tears before I even put it on.

Agree. Anxiety does not fit. It's this album's "beautiful sorta".

Disagree - that album needs a dose of energy in it. Plus it's loose and ramshackle like the rest.

The show the other night was good. There was a brief amazing lightning storm and downpour after the Mountain Goats' opening set. It added to the experience.

I've come to think that Isbell is a very good singer, although it tends to get unfairly overshadowed by his songwriting.

He ended with Whipping Post, which gave me a chance to say goodbye, in a sense, to Gregg Allman, whom I got to hear sing many times.

His singing has gotten so much better since he stopped drinking. He's never been bad, but there were times when he would just kinda yell.

I think this is gonna be my album of the summer. Just keeps getting better the more I listen to it.

I love it. I think it is a great follow up to Southeastern. Overall I think the Something More Than Free is a more consistent listen but I think the standout tracks on Southeastern are far better which sets it apart. Elephant and Cover me Up are outstanding as well as Live Oak but the song that really gets at me on that album is The Songs That She Sang in the Shower. I know some people don't agree but I fucking absolutely love that song. I really only like Traveling Alone because I ran into him about 8 years ago in Ybor City, not trying to name drop or anything. I'm talking like 10 seconds of holy shit aren't you Jason Isbell.

The show in St Paul last weekend was incredible. Anxiety was an unfortunate choice for show opener (so loooong), but it was all after that. They played the whole new album minus Something to Love, a bunch of SMTF and SE, Never Gonna Change, and closed with Whipping Post. Mountain Goats kicked ass too.
