Tell me how many advanced democracies have a large black or otherwise impoverished population that typically have difficulty obtaining ids and vote democrat
If you need to show a state issued drivers license to vote, and then the state of Mississippi closes all the RMVs in black neighborhoods, you have a problem.

If concern about voter fraud has been such an issue, than why has it really only picked up as a state of emergency issue for many of these states in the past decade? The pace of requiring photo ID picked up dramatically in the years following 2010. Voter fraud had been talked about for a long time, with some states issuing pretty soft ID restrictions. What happened that there was suddenly a rush?

Put forth a valid reason voter id laws should be enacted.
valid
A person could lie about their identity to vote in place of another person.
To what advantage
To ensure a larger number of votes for the candidate of their choosing.
So.. like a conspiracy of voters who vpte once for their candidate and then use a fake name to go vote again? Wow, we've been fucked over by this web of deception forever!
does this secret conspiracy to overthrow democracy have a cool name too? "The fakers" "The vote em and vote em again gang"

Nah, but you wanted one valid reason. So there you go.
I disagree with universal sufferage so we will never eye to eye on this.

It's not a valid reason because the necessity doesn't exist

Section 5 and most other special provisions apply to jurisdictions encompassed by the "coverage formula" prescribed in Section 4(b). The coverage formula was originally designed to encompass jurisdictions that engaged in egregious voting discrimination in 1965, and Congress updated the formula in 1970 and 1975. In Shelby County v. Holder (2013), the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the coverage formula as unconstitutional, reasoning that it was no longer responsive to current conditions.[11] The Court did not strike down Section 5, but without a coverage formula, Section 5 is unenforceable.[12]
Burt, a few of those European countries also have automatic registration. Would you be comfortable with automatic registration going into law along with Voter ID? Seems fair to me.
Follow-up question: how do you think automatic voter registration would go over with the two major political parties?

I think I was recently auto-registered here. I'm fine with it. Republicans would rage, though.

I wonder why.
Do you see why Voter ID laws come across as really shady when it is obvious to everyone that a larger turnout would basically guarantee Democratic victory and likely force both parties to the left? The elephant in the room is Texas turning blue, which I think a lot of this push comes from. One of the big consequences of the Trump regime is the alienation of the Hispanic voting bloc, which largely despises him.

I would even extend this.. registration with selective service registration and voting moved from Tuesday to Saturday AND Sunday.

Yep. Election day should definitely be a weekend/national holiday.

Having voting on a work day is way more discriminatory than voter identification laws.

Can you see how people can perceive it's shady to not require ID in states with large numbers of non-citizens?
If larger turnout would result in higher votes for democrats, why not make voting compulsory? Would you be ok with that? i wouldn't.
I don't care much about how people perceive it anyway. That has little to do with the validity of requiring ID at a voting booth.
The parties' are always going to act in their self interest. They are trash and I don't form my opinions based on their platforms.
