These bands lost nothing in their down time, amazing records that absolutely hold up with the back catalogs.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Failure. THIAM is my favorite album of theirs.

DMB: Big Whisky & The Groogrux King. Finally, a great DMB record that stood up alongside the first 3 and The Lillywhite Sessions.

yeesh. it was certainly better than most of their 2000s output, so it has that going for it. but imo away from the world came a lot closer to reaching their earlier musical highs than big whiskey ever did. lillywhite really brought out their best in their career.

yeesh. it was certainly better than most of their 2000s output, so it has that going for it. but imo away from the world came a lot closer to reaching their earlier musical highs than big whiskey ever did. lillywhite really brought out their best in their career.

I look at Away From The World as a continuation from Big Whiskey. I thought it was a good return to the old vibe and a cool tribute to LeRoi. Tim Reynolds coming back really gave them a creative spark, too.

Pearl Jam - Yield

As much as No Code can be revered by hardcore fans it did not go over well at the time. Yield was a greater hit with the general population.

There is only three years between Vitalogy and Yield, and they also toured and released Mirrorball and Merkinball in that period. No Code peaked at 1, Yield peaked at 2, those are US numbers. I believe No Code has also outsold Yield, and is generally rated as close to, equal or better in quality. I do remember that the spin at the time was that No Code was different from what people expected, while Yield was more pleasing for the fans. But I think that is vastly overstated. And surely it can not be considered a great comeback coming after a longer period of creative drought.

As of 2003, Yield had done 1.6 million US sales vs 1.3 million for No Code. I'm willing to bet sales since then have been a negligible gain for one or the other. Yield actually sold more copies in it's first week on the chart than No Code, but was up against the Titanic/Celine Dion two headed monster.
