I think im going to sound like Trump here for a second.

Was John McCain actually ever really a hero or even especially brave? Is his greatest accomplishment literally that he didn't die when held captive? Is that heroic and brave or just you know, staying alive?

Maybe he's always been a coward but we're all too afraid to say it?

If you dodge a draft due to moral or ethical outrage over war, then fine. If you dodge the draft because you're simply a coward, then fuck off.

But also didnt he save a bunch of POW's because of his capture and subsequent survival?

Well, he was caught while fighting in a war, right? That's pretty brave if you ask me

And TBH I'm surprised you didn't think that part through before posting that, Skitch. Unless you don't think fighting in battle is brave

I agree to that extent. But is his bravery greater than any of the other hundreds of thousands of men and women before or since? That no matter what a coward he has been since he still gets to be called a hero? or credit for doing so?

Im assuming a baseline of bravery and sacrifice that simply joining implies. Im talking comparatively to anyone else that also did the same.

Again, who is saying he is more brave than anyone else that went through it?

Skitch is saying that, he has been a bit of a coward within his political career over the past 10 years or so. Palin? Not standing up to Trump? etc. C'mon.

If I remember correctly, he was offered release by the Vietnamese because his father was an admiral and he refused to be release before other prisoners taken before him.

Skitch just wants to have a hot take on the issue. But he's disguising it as a luke warm take so as not to offend. If the material works here, look for it in finished form on twitter dot com.

I think that the bravery label on people who are POW's is just a magnification of the fact that they are serving. When they are captured, and survive, we say they are brave, and in actuality we mean they are brave for putting themselves in that position in the first place. However, I don't think it means that people who fought but weren't capture are any less brave. And I've never seen anyone argue that fact. If they do, they are fucking retarded.

we'll probably see a little bump in his approval rating as some defectors start coming back around to him for this.
I suspect not.

There probably aren't a lot of people who are enamored of this decision who aren't also invested enough in the surrounding worldview to have stuck with him so far. There does exist, however, a slim culture of elderly die hard Republicans who love a transgender family member, possibly a son or daughter, and have developed a whole passive, nonliberal, nonconfrontational "two sentences over coffee at the pancake house" language for advocating for them.

Short term poll impact will be inconsequential, or possibly misleading because so much else is going on...too many variables on the playing field...but this will definitely trade silent defections by a very few supporters in exchange for what he needs right now: boundless enthusiasm and righteous rage on the part of the base.

I say again: culture war as a means of survival.

If this is true it will really piss me off. Not that I'm on Twitter much, but he'll have one less follower.

Still, he should keep his hot takes to stuff like Wal Mart pricing policies on Legos
