This song is not directed to his wife or his kids. It's directed to people who feel the same way he does (mainly about religion and the world order). It's another song in the same manner as MYM. In fact, it makes me think they are related. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole album is. Lightning Bolt is tough to make much out of (lyrically - it gets jumbled towards the end), but it doesn't make me cast that theory off either.

P.S. To answer a question on why are there new posters here: I'm here, like many, because I was banned from the Pit. Then they wanted me to pay again and I thought to myself - F them. Anyway, I was here way back under another name, for some reason I can't login under that name. In fact, I started that Target, Ticketmaster, and the Ten Club thread a few years back. Anyway, I only find time to talk PJ around album releases anymore. One remaining question I have that everyone seems to be ignoring - how will the distribute this album (Target, Walmart)?

You're talking about Future Days right?
Yes, I am. I think, like other author's have suggested, it's a "hopeful and anti-apocalyptic ballad" (see here http://consequenceofsound.net/2013/07/w ... ture-days/).

Whoever suggested taking (Lightning Bolt) out of the thread title.. I agree.

I think we need to poll these songs also.

I'm very surprised that after hearing three songs from the record, my favorite is Mind Your Manners by a considerable margin.
"Future Days" is the sort of song that would have been fine to put on a charity album for breastfeeding moms, but not the sort of thing you want taking up precious running time on a proper album.
this is my concern.

Who can even tell the difference between this type of Ed song and the others he has written anymore? Is this really that much different than the bad one we got for that chick flick, or that other one that sounded like it that came after?

One of the issues with Ed's songwriting contributions is that he often leaves very little space for two other guitars since he often plays the vocal melody on the guitar and plays open chords across six strings. It means that there's very little of the band's personality within the song as Mike and Stone are largely following the main chords or playing incidental guitar licks and Jeff is playing root notes. I think this is probably where we get the idea that these are 'solo' songs because the rest of the band is largely redundant. However, if the songs were any good I probably wouldn't care about any of this - I don't have a problem with Corduroy or Elderly Woman or Off He Goes because they are good songs.
This is certainly true; it pertains to the rock songs as well. You can listen to the riff on Insignificance, and it's doing A LOT. Which can be cool, and when the band is able to use it to an advantage it's good, but when you have something like Unthought Known when he's just wailing on open chords for all their worth trying to add some interesting counter melodies or accompaniment runs the risk of dissolving the arrangement into mush.

I think the reason this happens is that Ed's tending to write songs to sound good to himself, melodies, lyrics and all on his own whereas the others probably try to leave more space, knowing that Ed's melodic contribution is going to markedly change the composition.

The drums are in the dawn
And all the voices gone
And it seems that there are no more songs.

I'm not sure I can hear them doing anything at all, so I guess I'm looking forward to finding out whether what they're doing is nice.

I guess he means that this song might be Ed's 'Heal The World'?

Just listened to this for the first time...

Not a fan of the lyrics necessarily and the solo-ness to it but I really like the vocal melody. He's not straining his voice. I can see this being a pretty solid song on the album but a real snoozer live. I'm kind of a sucker for these Ed songs though (TMW, Just Breathe, etc.) so take that for what it's worth.
