Jesus, Mellon Collie is really fucking far from grunge. I could maybe see the argument for Gish, but nothing after that. The Smashing Pumpkins were much closer to 90s indie rock than grunge.

They were pretty close to the whole movement...from Drown being in the Singles Soundtrack to them playing with Nirvana, Lolla and being close to a lot of the bands from the era.

Its fitting for them to be included here.

Green Day played Lollapalooza 94. Green Day is not grunge

yeah, but its not the same..its funny you chose Hendrix instead of Paul Westerbeg. Anyway, im glad to have SP from that era in this tournament.

they were covered as grunge during that era, especially as grunge transitioned from a Seattle scene to a larger musical movement. It's not like the seattle bands have much sonically in common with each other - there is certainly as much daylight between them as there was between any of those bands and the pumpkins.
