Jesus, Mellon Collie is really fucking far from grunge. I could maybe see the argument for Gish, but nothing after that. The Smashing Pumpkins were much closer to 90s indie rock than grunge.

They were pretty close to the whole movement...from Drown being in the Singles Soundtrack to them playing with Nirvana, Lolla and being close to a lot of the bands from the era.

they were covered as grunge during that era, especially as grunge transitioned from a Seattle scene to a larger musical movement.
