The lyrics of Big Wave utterly destroy it, even though the music underneath is perfectly fine. Same with Supersonic (although I even hate the chorus of that one musically).

I hate the first minute of lightning bolt but kind of dig the rest of it.

Army Reserve is either missing another verse or a slight change in music as it slowly chugs to the finish line. That missing piece is what keeps it a good song, not a great song.

While a Western guitar motif lost on the swings drum bass fusion, get your own thoughts into the subconscious often forgotten. "Pendulum" is a sweeping soul from the ballast.

The outro of Present Tense is amazing, the rest of the song sounds like hippy dippy self help mush to me.Strat wrote:I hate the first minute of lightning bolt but kind of dig the rest of it.
I dislike ed's voice on Around the Bend, it might be the most nasal he's ever sounded. But i really love the song.
I hate eds voice on the chorus on Army Reserve, it sounds like he's trying to sing while someone else is trying to strangle him.
I really like the music and chorus on Bushleaguer, so while i don't mind the spoken word tirade against bush i find it unfortunate that it on this song.

The overuse of "spoken" on the Jeremy remix. Other than that, I think it sounds better than the proper Ten version.

Yup. It could've soared with a bridge, imo, and a less boring intro.EJ wrote:Army Reserve is either missing another verse or a slight change in music as it slowly chugs to the finish line. That missing piece is what keeps it a good song, not a great song.
I'm gonna go ahead and put LIGHTNING BOOWWLLT in here.

The vocals on Comatose. Can't believe that vocal take made the cut on the album. I dig the music though, even though I was never a huge fan of the S/T production.

I still haven't heard that song, but I can imagine that inclusion would exponentially ruin things on almost any song.harmless wrote:Yup. For a few years there, my entire fandom of PJ rested on their music and ethos consisting of hippy dippy self help mush. I did not imagine that the straw would ever break the camel's back in that regard.stupidmop wrote:The outro of Present Tense is amazing, the rest of the song sounds like hippy dippy self help mush to me.Strat wrote:I hate the first minute of lightning bolt but kind of dig the rest of it.

I guess I don't see the point in the Michael Jackson 'Ben' reference on Rats.

Re: Parts you don't like of Pearl Jam songs you DO like
So some people like the first half of Present Tense but not the second (I'm in this camp) while others like the second half but not the first bit.
Perhaps we can agree that they just don't seem to belong together?
oh and I'm with stip on the lyrics to No Way thing.

The lyrics of No Way are good, even very good.
And I do think PT and its outro go together, even if they're totally different. If we don't like parts not fitting together in a traditional way, surely have to throw out several intros and outros on Vs. and Vitalogy as well.
