I'm thinking of just syaing off for the new album release cause I don't want it to color how I listen to it. I want to listen to the album freely, and not be influenced. It's like a Debby Downer thing. I just want to feel the new music, and then I'll figure out where I stand on it. Taking one listen, and then posting some histrionic statement about how much I love it or or how much it sucks only ruins it for me. Imagine doing that for Vs way back when. I think things would have been different if there a message board during the early years.
That's why I think it a tad bit disingenuous when we talk about how it's the 'tone' of the posts here that drags it down a bit. It's that posters who are positive about the new material don't really like being in the minority. And if that's your viewpoint, okay, but let's call it that instead of trying to bury the lede.
I think there is more to this than that Digster. Most of us are going to hear the album in the context of the RM conversation surrounding it. And that context colors that experience. Anyone who says otherwise is placing themselves in opposition to everything we know about mass/group psychology. RM being overly positive or negative will not fundamentally alter your experience, but it will shade it--especially at first.
Beyond that, there is also a question of just being respectful. This is over the top, perhaps, but it is easy to imagine how two people trying to have an intelligent conversation about the pros and cons of, say, Obamacare, would find that process more difficult with some idiot screaming Obama is Hilter every 5 minutes, or someone else interrupting by insisting that everyone spell America with a K. On a lesser scale you'll get that here with the negativity (you might get the opposite on the pit).
And finally, this is, first and foremost, a pearl jam forum, and they are in the process of releasing their first album in 4 years. That's an important event for a lot of people. This place would suck if everyone felt like they had to like it. But I think it is reasonable to realize that someone's negative experience is far more likely to do harm than someone's positive experience, and so the people who don't like stuff, during this window, should be mindful and respectful of that.
I'm not going to go back through this thread and highlight the difference between respectful and disrespectful opinions/criticism. I will assume until told otherwise that's a clear distinction.

there's a lot of good people here.
Part of my problem is I still cling to this belief that the internet CAN and SHOULD hold itself to the conversational norms we'd use in real life.

I don't know if that fake tracklist is real, but if it is, I know exactly what 'Punch and Judy' should sound like, but it won't.

With 2 confirmed titles, fake tracklistings will probably get a nice second wind here.
There's the dog. You can't fake that stuff. Confess with your mouth.
