This whole merch deal with the store being open for days and there being multiple posters and cards and then the dog collars and it just reeks of money grabbing. The music seems to be an afterthought now and just a vehicle to push more merch.
Now the music or the attitude towards the music (to an outsider who knows little of what is actually happening except what is said and delivered).
The lack of band time writing and jamming and structuring new material. It seems that the band sans Ed get together and whittle down their ideas to what they believe would work (forgetting that tracks like Release and Go blossomed from a jamming/relaxed environment). Then Ed picks what he deems worthwhile but he doesn't want to put in too much effort (or do homework).
However he certainly puts in the homework on the material he brings in, essentially they a fully constructed songs. And there will always be 30-40% sole-Vedder compositions on the albums. This seems tilted away from the music that I have been drawn towards in the past.
Then there's the whole getting together for 2 months here for a quick tour and maybe record, hell we might see each other next year haphazardness and it really does come across as they are taking this THING for granted. Especially the live festival circuit and the PJ20 lap of honour they've been on for 3-4 yrs.

You forgot the 90 day count-down clock, even after said 4 years.

True. My main point is that it's about (or already is) as bad as RM gets right now. I think I've been on this board for at least 10 years - prior to the 2004 re-set, and the snark level is a 10. Truly dangerous.

Yeah. It's pretty bad. I was having fun for a while.

They've been at it longer than most of the other bands, and remained largely intact as a unit for 21+ years. There aren't too many bands that have been around like that for so long, other than U2, the Rolling Stones, and maybe a few others. Everyone else has had at least some major changes or rethinking. I guess Aerosmith counts, but in my humble opinion, Aerosmith hasn't really knocked my socks off in a long long time (their 70s output to me is rather solid, but once they pulled off the initial rebranding they just seemed to be a shell of that prior awesomeness).
Then again, U2 went from political anthems to Pop to pumping out cliche anthems ad nausea, the Rolling Stones have had band member changes and long hiatus periods, and Aerosmith had a long break in the 80s to rehab, then pulled career 180s one after the other.
In other words, it's really rare for a group of artists to stay relatively consistent over this long of a time.
