Re: The 45th POTUS - Donald J. Trump
To some degree i understand the differentiation you're making, my dad is 91. Was brought up during the depression and is first generation American, parents from Sicily, yet all my life he and my mom taught us that bigotry and prejudice is wrong, and led by example... Still... The culture was differnt in say 1975 than today, and SOME things then weren't classified as bigoted etc. So dad would sometimes say things that I'd stop and pause over because it didn't jibe with what my folks would teach us about prejudice.
I think the only time time i ever heard the n word out of my dad's mouth was once at the age of 15, when he was really angry about something (no longer remember the details), but that was enough for me to understand that while he wasn't prejudiced in practice, he still held onto some now antiquated views, which appeared racist to me.
That said, i don't think trump can be forgiven for bigoted statements from an old man in the same way.
Not only is he President, and should at least pretend to act like one regardless of his opinions, but he repeatedly makes about the most stereotypically racist, sexist, and ignorant of cultural heritage differences ive ever heard.
Hes andrew dice clay with even less of a punch line.
He's archie bunker without the moral at the end of the story
And hes the most public figurehead in the United States
This isnt the stupid cultural values of a different generation we're witnessing in trump, this is racist bigoted misogynistic attitude that he casually allows to govern his.. Uh, governing...

Trump was unimpressed with waterboarding, a banned interrogation tactic that he has pledged to bring back against suspected terrorists, and supplement with far worse forms of abuse.
“Is it torture or not? It’s so borderline,” he said. “It’s like minimal, minimal, minimal torture.”

The downside of chumming up to a guy who will sell out his entire country is that he'll almost definitely sell you out as well.96583UP wrote:well get flippin' for cripes sake

The reason Manafort is the first and most overt target of Mueller’s high-powered inquiry is that he sits atop a massive tangle of ties to Russia, pro-Russian Ukrainians, and shady New York real-estate deals. Any one of those could pop up like a jack-in-the-box in Mueller’s offices, leading to criminal charges against Manafort—who, you’ll recall, was campaign manager for Donald Trump last year. And, were that to happen, it’s possible that Manafort—who isn’t really part of Trump’s inner circle, which consists of his sons, his daughter, and his son-in-law—would “flip,” telling what he knows about Trump’s Russia connections in exchange for immunity. So far, at least, Manafort’s spokesman says that Manafort is not a “cooperating witness”—that is, that he is not providing testimony to Mueller and the FBI against others, only that he is cooperating with the special counsel. So far.

Not when you consider who he is and what he's been doing. He's just waiting for his Col. Jessup moment to yell "I'm the goddamn President and I'll do whatever the fuck I want!"Bi_3 wrote:It's one thing for an old man to say bigoted and offensive things, it's an entirely other thing to imply support for groups that support terrorism and murder.malice wrote:can you elaborate?Bi_3 wrote:Implying support for neo-nazism is a whole different level of fuckery.wease wrote:Naw. Re: The 45th POTUS - Donald J. Trump
Trump's playbook:
- He is making people not trust the mainstream, professional media - even calling them fake news as they ask a difficult question
- He's decreasing confidence in official law enforcement establishments
- He's decreasing confidence in the intelligence agencies
- He's decreasing confidence in the voting system
Come 2020, we may see one of two things.
He gets re-elected
He claims all the above worked against him, stirs up the alt-right, the preppers, the survivalists, the anti-establishment and you have a President who refuses to leave office

Re: The 45th POTUS - Donald J. Trump
I think Bi_3 is on the right track. The amount of pushback and open hostility Trump is getting from Republicans may not feel remotely sufficient yet, but it is actually extraordinary when you look back at history. And this is while he has a stranglehold grip on their base that could rip the party in two, and influence with major conservative media powers.
He could still hit on an avenue that makes it all work for him...pivoting everyone from talking about Nazis to talking about statues was weirdly effective...but today's shit firmly argues against that happening long term.

This is really, just anecdotal memory, but I feel like the response to the Access Hollywood tape on the part of Republicans was far more immediate and wide-ranging than this, and most of those who fled screaming from him had crawled back even prior to Election Day. I'm not really sure the same doesn't happen here. I can see them not being fervent supporters of him as a President, but I think a cult of personality, coupled with the fear of a Republican base far more passionate about the President than Congress, will keep them beholden to him.

Donald Trump is campaigning against two sitting Republican senators, and it's not even one of the top stories of the night.

Man it would be so great if this finally was the turning point. For all trump's talk about deal-making, it's been 7 months and he still hasn't delivered anything meaningful for the business community. Meanwhile, he has directly attacked about a dozen of the most influential U.S. Corporations, and alienated almost every international head of state/trading partner.
Monied interests pay mercenary Congressmen like Mitch McConnell to say and do what they want them to. It doesn't take a Russian spy agency to find/deliver crippling info to bring a politician down. You wonder if enough of the American powers that be are getting to the point where they realize this schmuck can't deliver and continuing to ride along with him in the hopes that he can has become too bad for business.
And then...
