Bleed the Freak is a solid facelift song. But Meladori Magpie is lovely, sad, playful, and surprising. One of my favorite Pumpkins songs. If you're not familiar with it it's worth a listen.

I was originally on-board with including SP in this contest, but the deeper we get the more I regret that collective decision we made. Too many of their songs are pop or metal, and don't sound anything like the other bands.

Grunge just means flannel, cargo shorts, and doc martens.

I really liked that scene in Hype when the guitarist says "This is punk," then plays a bunch of slide-up power chord riffs; then he says "This is grunge," and does the same thing but slides down the neck. I thought that was pretty succinct and accurate.

Screaming Trees isn't in the contest either.

And this is such an easy vote for Bleed the Freak

The name Meladori Magpie always made me think of Radiohead, even before they put the word Magpie in a song. The slide guitars on this one are great. I think a lot of what I listen to regularly is closer in spirit to SP than AIC, and this song is a good example of that. Not even close for me. Meladori Magpie is true blue.

No, but I just mean their guitar tones and riffs are often more metal than grunge.

I love when Corgan does those little a capella sections in heavy songs. That one and "The Everlasting Gaze" come to mind. Two of my favorite SP moments, for sure.

Oh yeah they definitely aren't grunge. Maybe Gish, but that's about it.

For sure. It's always felt tongue-in-cheek "metal" to me, which reminded me to post that here.

I'm super glad Smashing Pumpkins are in this tournament, but I'm voting Bleed the Freak here.

Re: Smashing Pumpkins metal, I'd say XYU and Tales of the Scorched Earth are pretty metal. Geek USA kind of. It's not actually metal but it's close.

Bleed The Freak is not a bad song. One of the better early AiC songs.
