I'm hoping it works better in context of the album too (unlike Just Breathe). I'm not a big fan of Thumbing My Way, but i feel like it went well within the world of Riot Act.

A song about domestic violence? That's not what I thought at all.

Ha ha. True... in some ways.harmless wrote:I think illuminEddie might just be living up to his name here.Thejambi wrote:IlluminEddie wrote:Me opinion:
This song is not directed to his wife or his kids. It's directed to people who feel the same way he does (mainly about religion and the world order). It's another song in the same manner as MYM. In fact, it makes me think they are related. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole album is. Lightning Bolt is tough to make much out of (lyrically - it gets jumbled towards the end), but it doesn't make me cast that theory off either.
P.S. To answer a question on why are there new posters here: I'm here, like many, because I was banned from the Pit. Then they wanted me to pay again and I thought to myself - F them. Anyway, I was here way back under another name, for some reason I can't login under that name. In fact, I started that Target, Ticketmaster, and the Ten Club thread a few years back. Anyway, I only find time to talk PJ around album releases anymore. One remaining question I have that everyone seems to be ignoring - how will the distribute this album (Target, Walmart)?
You're talking about Future Days right?
But, honestly, take a look at the album cover. This is not the first album with the 'all seeing eye'. So, yeh conspiracy driven - no doubt, but you got to admit it's a bit odd, at least it is to me.
Anyway, personally, when I heard the first single was going to be called MYM, I almost vomited in my mouth. Then I saw the plate and table setting and actually did a bit. Then I saw that full single cover. And thought hmm. Then I heard the song and dissected the lyrics. It's interesting because those lyrics show how a twist here or there can change the thought behind a song. MYM, to me, if you change a few words could have been a rally against the Barry O administration. For example, imagine the lyrics are "I've got an unfortunate feeling, I've been beating down, I feel I don't believe and now the truth is coming out, what they've taken is more than a FILE, they've taken your innocence and thrown them in a burning pile". To me that one word changes this first verse into a rally against the Obama admin and NSA snooping. But, most think it's VOW, and I probably agree given the rest of the lyrics. Another lyric there that's troublesome for me is "We could WILL it to the sky, or we could something else". What if that word is "WAVE" not "WILL"? To me, that would indicate a flag of some sort. I don't know, but either way, the more I looked at this tune and the lyrics we take as fact, I think this is a obvious rally cry against unified religion. To me, connected with the all seeing eye album cover. This is a tune that could seriously be kinda Illuminati type anthem. I mean seriously read the lyrics and just read a tiny bit on the illuminati.
Then, on top of that we get this new tune Future Days. And some writer claims it's a anti-apocalyptic ballad. In the context of the guesses above... that would seem to fit. In this tune, you then get this chorus: "I BELIEVE, AND I BELIEVE BECAUSE I CAN SEE". I mean, that's obviously a shot at religion. What if the entire set of lyrics aren't written to a lover? What if he's writing to his fan base, to people like him? People who don't believe in a God they can't see? What if he's purposefully cryptic here? I know loony stuff. Also, if he's talking about the future here (like the title hints).... when he says "the hurricanes and cyclones rage, the winds (?) into dust, the floods they came and the tides they raised, ever closer became us?"... seems to hint at that apocalyptic theme and his side winning. I dunno just tossing out ideas now. I need to see the full lyrics in the full album context.
Finally, we get this tune Lightning Bolt. If he's disguising this one, he's doing a great job. I'm start to think this one is also God-related. The "always something, never nothing ... isn't that the way we're taught to dream?" line is a hell of a shot at believers. The line after that seems to reference the Bible "looking through the worn out pages and stages...". I think in this tune, he's kinda saying the Lightning strikes these believers and doesn't let them go. The theme though is that faith it blinds them (them = her in this story)... hence the weed imagery, the death imagery and destruction, etc.
I know, a lot of guessing here, but this is what I thought of when I heard the new tunes. In all honesty, I think The End and Just Breathe are fantastic lyrically and Future Days kinda sucks. But, I think it could be good in a overall themed album, actually very good. Kinda feel the same about Lightning Bolt.
We'll see.

I like what you say here, honestly.
But I can't help feeling that you're reminding me of myself when I tried to make Backspacer more intelligent and coherent than it is. I mean, I worked pretty hard to do that before it came out and for a little while afterwards.

The NSA story broke on June 6th. There's no way the song is referencing that.IlluminEddie wrote:MYM, to me, if you change a few words could have been a rally against the Barry O administration. I probably don't give ole Edward enough credit, but I never read very far into his lyrics, and generally think they are very literal. People keep saying Johnny Guitar has sexual innuendo, but I doubt it.

If you an make an interpretation make sense then I don't see why it can't be your truth. I'm much more trained in the visual arts than music but one thing I learned is it almost doesn't matter what the artist says a piece is about or what he says is in it, the viewer has whatever control they want in getting something out of a piece.harmless wrote:I like what you say here, honestly.

I think all 3 songs have some ambiguity in them to where they have some wiggle room for interpretation.
