Most of you have talked very eloquently about this period and I share many of the feelings. I was definitely let down by the Binaural album. It was the first time I couldn't "feel" the music. Pearl Jam was such a visceral band and here there felt like a plastic window between me and the music. On the other hand, hopped up on borrowed Aderal, my friend and I drove through the night from Athens, Georgia straight to NYC to see them play Grievance on Letterman and it is one of the best performances of any song I've ever seen them play. That entire tour was so enjoyable.

Another aspect that struck me at the time was that it felt like we were getting a more intimate band. After No Code and Yield cut down the fan base, it felt like they were comfortable with the level of fame they had and their ability to connect with who was left. They trusted that we were going to be on the ride regardless of where they went. The two newsletters at this time gave me that feeling as well. One had all of the book recommendations. That oculd come off as pretnetious, but it seemed like more evidence that this band really wanted to do things differently. They wanted tear down some of the walls between band and fan. Like they were just a great rock band instead of some demigod kind of gig. The other was the Manual for Free Living and I still appreciate that they took the time to put it out there.

I wish they could have sustained that level of engagement with their own band and their own music. I guess it is easier to try and be one of the biggest bands on the planet.

Well, there isn't a better TV appearance by PJ then Hail Hail, closely tied with Grievance.

No argument about that here. I ended up with a handful of them from some Sony distributor here. I made cd covers out of them. Regret that now.

That really was such an underwhelming performance. But honestly at the time I was just so happy to see them on TV that I didn't care.

yeah it was one of the weaker lettermans.


If I am remembering correctly, REM played Lotus on conan right around that time and it was sooooooo much better.

"Lotus" is also a considerably better song than "Wishlist"

maybe. I love them both. But that live version of Lotus is still my definitive version of the song (although the bridge school version is awesome too)
