breakerfall is maybe the best example (for me) in the catalog of a song that does every single thing right on paper and yet somehow makes me unable to care much about the final product.

For me, it's up there with Get Right and Push Me Pull Me in terms of songs that have risen in estimation over time (you could throw Gods Dice in there also).

Once, Go, Last Exit, Sometimes, Life Wasted all PERFECT for the albums they opened...honestly so is Brain of J, Cant Keep, and Gonna See My Friend...all of them tell you what album you will be listening to, work as good first songs, and set the tone. Getaway is a step below that but still good. PJ has a 9/10 perfect record with openers and this is the one total black mark because besides sounding bad (IMO) it doesn't even set the tone for the right album because the strengths of Binaural are nothing like this song.
Breakerfall is better than Once, Life Wasted, Gonna See My Friend and Getaway. I'd even entertain an argument that it's better than Sometimes, too.
This guy gets it.

 This is crazy. Everybody knows Pearl Jam is where Cameron's drumming in PJ took a bit of a nosedive.
To me hearing Life Wasted and World Wide Suicide is like a breath of fresh air.
it was like falling in love all over again, like a few months ago when I had a McDonald's hamburger for the first time in years.
I LOVE MCDONALDS HAMBURGERS.

Breakerfall does not even hold a candle next to Once, not even close..

Ranking the album openers, as OPENERS? Not as songs but as Openers? God this is hard. I tried but I can't even do it. Once, Go, Last Exit, and Life Wasted are top tier, with Sometimes and Brain of J barely behind them, Can't Keep is next, then Gonna See My Friend, and then Getaway after a big gap, and then Breakerfall WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY down.

gun to my head Id say

Go
Last Exit
Once
Life Wasted
Sometimes
Brain of J
Can't Keep

Gonna See My Friend

Getaway

Breakerfall

I honestly have no idea if that's even right. They're honestly all so good besides Breakerfall, and Getaway is average

(songs that rank with the very best in their catalog)
Last Exit
Life Wasted
Go

(great songs, just a notch below)
Brain of J
Gonna See My Friend
Once
Can't Keep

(decent songs, but clearly at the bottom)
Getaway
Breakerfall
Sometimes

I agree Sometimes isn't a great song by itself, but it works to me as the opener to No Code, it basically screams this album is going to be very very different from what we have done before. And it works well to introduce an album with songs like Who We Are, Present Tense, and Off He Goes

I'd have a hard time ranking the album openers in terms of what they say about their respective albums. They're all very effective in that regard except probably Breakerfall, which offers no particular insight into Binaural.

I wonder if I argued that it did when I was doing the binaural write up

With the exception of Vitalogy and Lightning Bolt, the second song is always stronger than the opener.
