I think it's because buying a disc is a one-time purchase whereas the subscription model is a constant purchase over and over.

Sure. But let's just say there are a ton of people out there, like me, who want to watch The Mandalorian but don't want to subscribe to D+. They could sell the entire season digitally (like every other show out there does) and get $25 to $35 from each of us right now (and every time a new season drops) or they can get $7 from us once before we binge and cancel. Or more likely we'll just say "eff y'all" and steal it and not give them anything. Why? Why encourage piracy?

They'll still make more on the sub model of course. And we're talking about fractions, long term. But to de-incentivize buying their product (and perhaps earning new subscribers down the road because of it if the quality stands up) and encourage theft or turning people off just so they can trap consumers seems totally unnecessary and short sighted to me.

I guess I didn't realize Netflix is doing the same thing. That's so bananas to me! I could have sworn they dropped discs (at least) for the first season of Stranger Things (for example). And House of Cards. I guess that's done?

Oh well. Guess I won't be watching The Mandalorian.

I have the first season of ST on disc so you're right there, it's just been dropped for some dumb business reason that makes sense to suits.
