Same but I'd pick Mellon Collie as my favorite
Listening to MC right now and I think I might walk back my earlier post and agree with trag here
there's very little dead weight for a double album. I'd maybe a lose a couple of the later tracks on disc 2.
Yeah, what brought this on is that I had just tried to pare it down to a single album and it's impossible because almost every song is great.

Is there a best Shins album? Or is it all just “ugh, Shins”?

Of all the double albums out there the thought to bring Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness down to one disc has never crossed my mind.

Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection
Yes, Elton has other great albums but they all have moments of unevenness or lessor songs. Tumbleweed Connection is just outstanding front to back.
Joni Mitchell - Blue
Pretty much the same reasoning as Elton.

Disagree
What are you putting as on par with the debut album? Heartbeat City?
The second album is really good.
I think Heartbeat City and Shake it Up are both excellent albums. While not as good as their best album, they aren't "significantly worse" than it.
I've always held Candy-O above all the rest. Love the production. And that cover...
Though, I admit it's been years since I've given their catalog a good listen, outside of Candy-O and their debut.

I'll have to give Candy-O another try. It did not impress me when it first came out.

The first three albums are all amazing, and the fourth still really strong. The second is probably the best.

Not so fun fact about that song: After leaving the vet when I had to put Radar (whom we often called Ray) down, I got in my car and that song was playing on the radio. I completely lost it.
