His playing is hard yet can go into these loose jazzy rolls then just explode right on the one. The feel of all the songs is just spot on with him, he defines all the PJ songs perfectly, yet keeps them fresh show to show. He really mixes it up if you listen closely, his playing is never the same on any given song from show to show, a genius. I listen to shows and just focus on the drumming, he is just too good. A true legend. Made PJ perfect.
That's the problem. I don't like PJ perfect. With Jack and Dave there was more energy, more groove, and it was more raw. I like more loosey goosey Pearl Jam. One of the best examples I can think of is Mirror Ball. I pretty much love everything about that album. It sounds dirty, it's loose, it's groovy. It's PJ hitting their peak musically (Vitalogy > Binaural). Somewhere after 98, or maybe after the Binaural tour, they just seem to get more sterile, more "perfect", and that has turned me away. Not to mention, I'm just really not a fan of their latest efforts. Also, live now, it's far from "perfect", but not in that cool, groovy, raw way. It's just fast paced, and error filled, and sing alongy.
