That is a beautiful guitar sound. What a great performance that album version is.

I do see what they are saying about Matt's GTF on LO2L. He does hit it out of the park, and I'm a Jack fan. He lost the energy and feel soon after.

The band did. Not just matt. Mike started playing the intro faster, sans phase, they all just jacked it up and lost the nuance and intricacies of some of the guitar work.

So unfortunate.

Although, hearing it live in person, I never think any of those things.

They turned it into a blow the roof off anthem, which it almost always is. We have the studio for the more contemplative/self discovey story

Yeah, very odd that the guy who wrote the 11 reasons to love Matt included GTF. The live version, even as good as it is on LOTL, is nowhere near as good as the studio take.

If I were pointing out PJ songs with Matt behind the kit, I'd say people should listen to his drumming on: God's Dice (insane drumming), Can't Keep (beautiful drumming), Ghost (lovely fills), Insignificance, Big Wave, Got Some, Hitchhiker (the breakdown is really good), and Of The Earth.

Ultimately, this is their saving grace.

Given to Fly was the first Pearl Jam song to take me out of that live show trance.

Matt was so fucking good on LO2L

It's been a pretty steady decline since that time (at least with the live performances), whether or not that is because he purposefully scaled it back, or the band isn't as good, or because of age or energy, I have no idea.

But LO2L is one of the best drum performances this band has ever released.

For the entire 1998 tour he was excellent. I love what he did with Immortality that year - the Crocodile Cafe performance of this song in particular.

Pearl Jam haven't made an album I love since Matt joined and I don't think they can while he remains in the band.

Bummer.
Just so everybody knows, this was an inaccurate and ill thought-out opinion and I feel bad.

Is it just the 2 ill advised posts, Spenno? Out of 6800 that's not bad.

Matt Cameron is the greatest fucking drummer of all time. If you think he is not right for PJ you do not deserve to listen to music. You are simply a douche and should really know that you are a waste of life. Thanks.

But it really boggles the mind how anyone can debate Matt in PJ. I feel bad for them, you just do not understand what amazing quality is. His playing is hard yet can go into these loose jazzy rolls then just explode right on the one. The feel of all the songs is just spot on with him, he defines all the PJ songs perfectly, yet keeps them fresh show to show. He really mixes it up if you listen closely, his playing is never the same on any given song from show to show, a genius. I listen to shows and just focus on the drumming, he is just too good. A true legend. Made PJ perfect.

I think you were pretty spot on. I'd be shocked if PJ made a new album I loved. I love Binaural, and I really like RA, but it's been pretty much down hill since. I just see them going on the upswing again. They've pretty much flatlined.

He is definitely in the top 3 of all PJ drummers

That's the problem. I don't like PJ perfect. With Jack and Dave there was more energy, more groove, and it was more raw. I like more loosey goosey Pearl Jam. One of the best examples I can think of is Mirror Ball. I pretty much love everything about that album. It sounds dirty, it's loose, it's groovy. It's PJ hitting their peak musically (Vitalogy > Binaural). Somewhere after 98, or maybe after the Binaural tour, they just seem to get more sterile, more "perfect", and that has turned me away. Not to mention, I'm just really not a fan of their latest efforts. Also, live now, it's far from "perfect", but not in that cool, groovy, raw way. It's just fast paced, and error filled, and sing alongy.
