i kinda hate bono, and i dont listen to U2 anymore like i used to. But if i would have been at that live thing, i would have think that was pretty cool.

U2 deserve credit for this: For a band of such commercial stature and with such legitimate concern for superficial largesse, they've never given the impression (to me anyway) that the creative process has ever taken a backseat to those things. Very few bands historically have enjoyed their kind of megastardom yet still been so fearless about growing their sound, trying out weird shit, and not being afraid to fall flat on their faces--especially during the first 20 years of their career. Even their later "return to form" records had more than a few moments that showed the band seeking new ways to frame their familiar sound in ways that were structurally if not necessarily sonically different.

As much as I hate them, you can probably say the same thing about Coldplay too.

That's just way too easy, and lazy. Hate them all you want but if nothing else, Coldplay actually try. Really, really hard. They overthink, try way too hard to be "relevant" (often at the expense of their best material, and common sense) and try to have it both ways, but at least they write, arrange, record and produce their own music.

I don't think people give them enough credit because they really hate "Yellow", "Fix You" and "Paradise".

I don't care for their music and think Chris Martin writes arguably some of the worst lyrics in popular music history. But this not a remotely accurate summation of their career.

We're supposed to give Coldplay credit for writing and arranging their songs? How does writing their music set them apart from the 50,000 other bands/ songwriters out there? They aren't good songs. Coldplay is catchy. They are popular. More power to them. And maybe they even work hard. But my gawd, that music is rough on the ears and the soul. I mean, Billy Joel was catchy. Really, really catchy. But he didn't try to front himself as a rock band. I'm actually doing Billy Joel a disservice because his lyrics were stronger than Chris Martin lyrics. Now, you can look at the comparison to Billy Joel as a horrible affront. Billy Joel sold gobs of records and was a pop genius (whatever that's worth). Ditto Chris Martin. Coldplay only becomes a joke when someone wants to have the conversation where Coldplay, Radiohead, and U2 are in the same sentence. Coldplay are Billy Joel if he were British and he told himself his future was in a rock band a la Radiohead and U2. Piano player. Check. Catchy tune savant. Check. Horrible, embarrassing, instantly forgettable and nausea inducing music. Check.

i live on long island now and people get mad that I don't love billy joel. I didn't love like bon jovi when I lived in NJ though, so I'm used to it.

Wouldn't the Edge be the most important person on the stage? Rock history is going to remember the dood in the knit cap because he wrote all that band's music. Or again, when it comes to legacy, fans of the band know Bono without the Edge never makes it out of Dublin as a vocalist.

I could take a few of those catchy tunes on A Rush of Blood to the Head. As an album it's too much of the same. I was having dinner with my friend in a Korean place in NYC when this album was ruling the charts and airwaves. The restaurant began playing A Rush of Blood to the Head and by the second song my friend realized we were going to have to listen to the entire album and he became angry. I told him to simmer down and allow the sweet melodies to cascade over his tortured soul. It was only when he realized that the album was on a loop, that he jumped up and abruptly left the restaurant.

Sadly, I imagine that happened with Pearl Jam back in the early 90s. Such a scenario would have broken my heart.
