The news outlets normalized Trump for most of the year and a half of his campaign until about a month before the election when they realized he might actually win and then flailed wildly in the other direction trying to save themselves from blame.

Yeah but Putin has always thought they were the biggest and baddest. He's essentially just a USSR dictator. If you are scared of him just right now, you are doing it wrong. He's been like that since he's been in power.

There is reason to be more afraid of him now. We are headed to an inevitable clash of two bullheaded alpha males who will disagree and then come to blows.
Diplomacy is an unknown and irrelevant concept to Trump. Putin has only shown the vauguest acknowledgment of it. We are all in trouble.
