I may be exaggerating. I know for sure he did at least two shifts of at least two hours and worked on it in shorter bursts at other points. I'd have to go into the thread and look, but I do remember making a post about the timestamps of the fake ballots and expressing genuine concern for his mental health

But he used to record under the name Smog, and while he did feature other musicians on those albums (just as he does now), it's pretty well established that "Smog" was just Bill Callahan under a pseudonym. So if I vote for Bill Callahan because the records he's released under his real name on my favorite, but trag votes for Smog because he likes the Smog records, are they both counted for Bill Callahan, or are they counted separately? Jason Molina vs. Songs: Ohia is also an important example of this, I think, as are Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy/ Palace.
Another name that comes to mind is Trent Reznor. Nine Inch Nails has had a huge crew of studio and touring members over the years, but I think it's generally understood that Reznor has always been the creative engine at the center of the band, basically writing (and sometimes recording) every part, IIRC. He's also had a prolific career as a film composer under his own name. If I wanted to cast a vote for "Trent Reznor," I might want to use the vote to represent both his contribution to NIN and his film work, so will it also count for NIN votes? I don't think this is as good of an example as the ones above.

I already submitted my list but I do wonder about 3 artists whose material is so inextricably combined with their bands that you can’t really separate them from each other: Neil Young (Crazy Horse), Tom Petty (the Heartbreakers), and Bruce Springsteen (the E Street Band). For instance, there are albums where Neil Young used Crazy Horse but they are not in the title and those where they are. Same with Bruce. For Tom Petty, his solo albums are largely made up of individual members of the Heartbreakers sitting in.

I can't speak to Smog vs Bill Callahan but NIN is distinctly separate from the Reznor/Ross soundtrack work in my mind.

Right. I think the word "Artist" is key, because even though BC has recorded under different names, he's the artist. No one else is responsible for that creative output.

The more I think about it, it's definitely not the same sort of issue. When you think of NIN, there's a whole amalgamation of people who contributed to the band as artists--their live performances certainly are a critical part of their history--so even though Trent wrote and recorded "solo," the sum is greater than just his contribution. So a vote for NIN is not a vote for Trent Reznor. But due to his centrality, I think a vote for "Trent Reznor" as an artist could be construed as a vote for NIN. But it's a stretch.

This is a real conundrum. I'm glad I don't need to make the decision. I'm just tallying the votes. What you put in your list and how you populate it is up to you.
Also, trag you're allowed to submit a list of 19 names if you want. Or don't, up to you
