I was just listening to No Code, and I am so enamoured with that feeble little guitar solo in "Around the Bend".

I think "Around the Bend" is the best sounding studio recording in PJ's catalog.

I've been listening to sad a lot, its gone from being just a cool song, to blowing my fucking mind. I've also been playing it back to back with otherside and its awesome.

Yanno, all of my passionate complaints and criticism against Backspacer don't take away from my enjoyment of it when it's actually playing. Most of it makes my ears happy.

The sound of No Code is outstanding. I don't what was different about that recording process but I wish the albums since had that clarity.

All my PJ stuff I keep arranged in three folderss: 1) Albums 1-5; 2) Albums 6-..., and 3) B-sides and Rarities. If one drew a diagram of my listening habits, it would show high columns for 1 and 3 with a very low number 2 in the middle. I moved Backspacer to folder 1 shortly after it came out 8) To me it belongs in that group despite all its faults.

For all that I'm a fan of 'Around the Bend', I do think its lyrics follow the general model of twee Ed songs that everyone seems to moan about. It's got some really bad lines. How much is the production contributing to everyone's enjoyment?

If the same song had been written for Lightning Bolt and produced by BO'B, we'd be shitting all over it.

Oh man would we ever.
But given it was the closer of the album that followed Vitalogy, it was shocking/brilliant at the time

Not really. It's a lullaby. Its lyrics are appropriate.

Thank you for admitting that, it took guts.

Future Days is a love song, its lyrics are appropriate (I can do that too!).

Is most people's problem with "Future Days" its lyrics? Because it's not mine.

But anyway, a lullaby is a song form that follows a more specific template than "love songs", to which "Around the Bend" adheres pretty faithfully.

Yeah, I think lots of people here think they're horribly cheesy. I'm just thinking, well, since when was 'horribly cheesy' a deal-breaker with this band?

I agree. I'm just saying that proportionally, there are a lot more fans who are perfectly happy for Ed to write a "lullaby" in the early noughties than there are for him to write the equivalent now. Is ATB any less cute (or any more cool) than something like 'Skipping'?
