It was OK, maybe a little too referential? Watching the first episode unfold I worry they are going to try and placate the fan base instead of building a unique world that evolves into the familiar (like Better Call Saul vs all that Star Wars crap on Disney+).

Also, the actors behind Viserys and Rhaenyra are kind of awful. First time I've ever thought 'put Matt Smith back on the screen'.

I consider that Viserys I is adding in a reason, but the Prince that was Promised was a long held prophecy, so it could track. Keep in mind that Viserys rode Balerion the Black Dread as a child until the dragon died of old age; he has a connection to Aegon
As I've read and listened to reactions to this over the course of the week, I am a little bit more on board with it. The X-Ray Vision podcast had a good segment on it, as they tried to trace how it was passed down to Hot D through the first few Targaryen kings. Basically, they imagine Aegon I probably told both his wives and his son, but things become messier after Maegor's reign. I don't have all the names in front of me, but they made a good case for how it could get to the events in Hot D and, maybe more interesting, how it might have had an influence on Summerhall and Maester Aemon and Bloodraven going to the Wall. Worth a listen.

As to why we've never heard of it before, if it really is such a close kept secret, it wouldn't appear in F&B or TWoIaF because those arw written by maesters can canonically, who wouldn't be privy to this info. Most important to all of this is that apparently GRRM added it to the show, not the showrunners.

I owe this thread a Mushroom post, but I'll wait to see if he shows up in the next episode. Da
Rumor has it that Mushroom is in the show, but you gotta watch for him
Essentially, I'm just upset that they might get rid of the fool character AGAIN after axing Patchface from GOT. He's one of my fav book characters and GRRM obviously has some Lear by way of Ahab shit going on with Stannis that didn't translate to the show due to this omission. We need more fools in these shows.

Those CGI shots of King’s Landing are awful.

Terrific episode. Loved it. I don't understand any criticism of the acting behind Viserys and Rhaenyra.

Agreed.

But that wide shot of the Dragonstone walkway and Syrax coming from beneath the clouds were breathtaking.

Anyone else get a little motion sick during the opening credits?

Kinda. It did feel a bit like a rollercoaster/water park ride.

I loved that entire dragonstone sequence

I think people mistake Viserys being kind of a dope on the actor not being up to snuff.

Could be. I'm also watching this series through the lens of having read Fire and Blood (and am currently re-reading it) so I may be subconsciously filling in any gaps or deficiencies in the storytelling and portrayals.

I guessed it was suppose to be like flying on dragon but I couldn't really follow what they were showing us.

I’ve noticed the hand-soaking and bandages, but they’re being very subtle about the throne rejecting Viserys by wounding him

I think you're underselling that they soaked his hand in maggots.

If you haven't watched the previews for next week's/upcoming episodes and you're not a book reader, I would suggest skipping this one. I feel like it gives away a lot of where the plot's going, including introducing a new character, that you might want to wait to see in the show.

*Skip the trailer, not the episode. Wanted to make that clear.

If you want to avoid house of the dragon spoilers, you should avoid watching house of the dragon

And definitely don't watch Game of Thrones. GoT spoiled the title music reveal for Hot D.

Agreed, and Rhaenyra is played perfectly.
