Re: new (old) song: Cold Confession
CC needs a whole different album than S/T, because its stylistically different and imo better than anything on that album. An album with CC and LiR on it would be completely different in tone and once again imo possibley better. Maybe its just cause I'm not really atatched to any of the S/T songs. Unemployable, army reserve and parachutes can stay. Throw Wws, comatose, Severed hand and big wave on a rawking ep, boom.
Or barring that, they'd probably fit ok if S/T wasn't mastered halfway to death and the instruments had some room to breathe.
Edit: forgot severed hand on my rawkin ep.

Anyone who thinks this isn't finished has got too used to Brendan O'Brien's attempts at fixin' them.

Yeah the writing is finished. I've said it before but I think the vocal takes would have been redone if going to mastering.harmless wrote:Anyone who thinks this isn't finished has got too used to Brendan O'Brien's attempts at fixin' them.
There's the dog. You can't fake that stuff. Confess with your mouth.

Re: new (old) song: Cold Confession
Probably, I probably would still prefer this one though the weird vocal melody he's got going on only works cause it sounds all rough round the edges and spontaneous/not overthought. Once you iron all that out all you have is a odd vocal melody. And probably some vocal over acting like the end. I really like eds mumbly singing to himself voice though, prefer the SOS vocals over the finals too.
I also thought this was an ed song, but it also has more groove than anything ed has written so that's probably stone. Makes sense if it was a jam.

I agree that they would iron out all the imperfections in the studio, and that it would probably diminish the song. At least we have better lyrics than Inside Job's here though.
I was listening to Breakerfall yesterday, thinking that it would be really nice if Ed would double up on the vocal like he did there on some new songs. Like, on Lightning Bolt, a low baritone spoken chorus underneath the screamed one would sound great, and make the song instantly cooler.

Yes I love that one higher vocal and one lower vocal layering ed used to do quite a bit, I don't know if he's done it on anything recent. Basically LB needs to sounds entirely like it was recorded 95-2000 to work, I want vocal layering and weird ass sounds and sound effects only properly heard through headphones
don't let me down ed.

MYM has a couple of interesting things going on in headphones, but only on a similar level to Backspacer.

Matt's demo clearly shows the bones of something promising but too little of what made it interesting ended up in the final product. It should've been the album's Get Right.

And Lightning Bolt should be this album's Wishlist / Evacuation mashup but it won't be.

The bridge part in fixer is really great. 'Ill dig your grave, we'll dance and sing..'
Pj never fail to write a great bridge.
Music and lyrics are really great in Fixer.
