Vs. features my favorite playing on any of the albums. There really are some underbaked songs on that record (even favorites like Go), but there is just so much ferocious commitment to everything.

I'm finally ready to admit that the Pearl Jam with Dave A was the best Pearl Jam musically. He added so much and not just on drums. Angel is such a friggin beautiful song.

Mine too.

I think that's true but with the caveat that I absolutely love the music they made with Jack too. Overall I'd have to give the edge to Dave however; I don't think Jack's style ever quite gelled with the earlier material in the same way that Dave's playing elevated the Ten songs when he joined the band.

Matt's arguably a better musician than either but a poorer fit for Pearl Jam.

But then that single vote you got wouldn't be as special, would it?

I've just watched an hour or so of Dave A clips. Currently on SNL rehearsals. So good.

I saw this posted over at the official forum, thought it was worth reposting here: the composer tags on the PONO version of Vs reveal (presumably accurately) the actual writer of each song.

The credits on Vs and Vitalogy have, until now, given a whole band credit (Abbruzzese, Ament, Gossard, McCready, Vedder) for every song with a few exceptions.

Most of this is pretty much known from interviews or guesswork already (eg. Stone writing Animal and Daughter, Dave being largely responsible for Go, etc.) but some of it is new or surprising, particularly Leash being a Stone and Mike co-write (I would've guessed Jeff due to the 12-string bass) and Rats being solely by Jeff (I thought Stone might've contributed too).

(It probably goes without saying that, save for RVM and Small Town, I think it's probably safe to presume Ed's credits are for lyrics only.)
1. Go - Dave Abbruzzese, Eddie Vedder
2. Animal - Stone Gossard, Eddie Vedder
3. Daughter - Stone Gossard, Eddie Vedder
4. Glorified G - Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, Eddie Vedder
5. Dissident - Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, Jeff Ament, Eddie Vedder
6. W.M.A. - Dave Abbruzzese, Jeff Ament, Eddie Vedder
7. Blood - Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, Eddie Vedder
8. Rearviewmirror - Eddie Vedder
9. Rats - Jeff Ament, Eddie Vedder
10. Small Town - Eddie Vedder
11. Leash - Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, Eddie Vedder
12. Indifference - Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Eddie Vedder

13. Hold On (demo) - Stone Gossard, Eddie Vedder
14. Cready Stomp - Mike McCready, Eddie Vedder
15. Crazy Mary - Victoria Williams

Hope they do the same for Vitalogy. Thanks for posting BiH.

Nothing too surprising in there except Leash.

The wiki page for Last Exit says Abbruzzese, Gossard. No one here has confirmed or denied it.

Do we have any reason to think these are accurate? I mean, legally the songwriting credits will always remain what they were before. Is this just metadata someone attached?

I guess I was assuming that the info was embedded in the original files provided to PONO through the band/label but I don't know for sure how their systems handle metadata, whether it can be edited by users, etc.

I think the store is only accessible to US-based PONO owners at this point (though I haven't looked into it further to confirm).

Rats being a Jeff composition makes sense to me.

What surprised you about Leash? Mike AND stone?

Yeah just Stone. Whereas Blood being the two of them seems right. I guess them jamming at soundcheck and on the bus yielded some good riffs.

Leash
Indifference
Dissident
Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town

These 4 songs really drag the album down for me. I think I'd put Pearl Jam over Vs. these days, and it's all because of these 4 songs. "Inside Job" is probably the only song from Pearl Jam that sucks as much as these 4. How did these 4 songs make the album? There had to have been better songs at the time, such as "Alone," and "Hard to Imagine." In fact, the next time I listen to Vs. I may take these 4 songs out, but that's kind of cheating.
