i think its true...the music might challenged what you are watching...specially if the movie is not good, like the reviews are saying..

Went and saw this movie today. Release is literally the only song in the movie and it is played at both the beginning and the end of the movie. I will not spoil the movie in the event any of you are looking to go and see it but at the beginning of the move Release did not fit (at least not to me) but at the end it fit perfectly (so you could argue that it did at the beginning as foreshadowing).

That said, this is a rough movie to watch. I thought it was very good, but I like movies that are depressing or disturbing (and this is certainly both). I took my wife and by the end of the movie she was angry with me for bringing her (just too depressing for her).

The version of Release is not the one from Ten. I do not know if it was re-recorded or not but this was a different version of Release. I could not tell from when it was played at the beginning of the movie because it was cut off, but at the end it was clearly not. I will probably come back and read that this was a recording from something that I am just forgetting but it was a different version to my ears tonight (please if I am wrong please someone tell me where it was from....cause my brain seems to not be working tonight) but definitely not from Ten.

ETA - The soundtrack that is sold for the movie that has songs by Hinchliffe (I think that is the name) is the Score to the movie. Just music. Release was the only song called out in the credits and it was oddly called out twice. Not sure why other than possibly the one at the beginning of the movie was a different recording than the one at the end but I could not say that for sure.

Ed's voice did kinda take me out of Into the Wild. it can be distracting.

It did me as well.

In Out of the Furnace, it does not but only because it is played at the opening credits and then to close the movie.

His example of "even if you just have it playing on the radio in the background…" kind of undoes that logic. I don't care how bad your movie is…the character could be flipping through the dial and come across John Lennon singing Across the Universe, and it wouldn't be enough to cause a director to go "oh no, I can't put this in there! What a mistake I almost made!"

How did the new version sound?

This director sounds like a weirdo though. Like a 10club I've got 6 children and they're all named after Eddie weirdo. Maybe ed backed the fuck outta there.

They weren't offering enough money

The explanation why the songs weren't included in the movie did sound weird and does make one sceptical. Though It made me think that it actually is rare to have a singer with a very distinctive voice do a full soundtrack.

So am I the only person who had that complaint about the Into the Wild songs in the actual film?

I thought they did a great job of helping create a mood and a sense of narrative in a story that was by and large almost episodic.

I think I had the opposite problem, in that they fit the film so well that I didn't end up enjoying them as much on their own. It's a fantastic set of songs, but I have a hard time engaging them independently after that. Or, when I do, I just get a bunch of sense memories of seeing the movie.

fair enough. I found them to be distracting. 'And now, here's eddie vedder singing'. I felt the same way hearing release play over the trailer. That could just be me, though

No, I agree. I liked the movie and the songs, but it was like certain scenes became Eddie Vedder music videos.

How did the new version sound?

It sounded really good. To be honest, it was not significantly different. At the beginning of it I thought it just sounded like the version from Ten muscially with what seemed like a more recent (and an older and wiser Ed's voice) but as it went on to the "Oh dear dad..." portion of the song it was definitely not from Ten at which point I was highly intrigued. The differences that I noticed were completely with Ed. That is not to say that he just redid lyrics over top of the music as it was recorded from Ten but that is kind of how it sounded in my one listen. As mentioned, the noticeable differences came around the second "Oh dear dad" and then at the "I'll open up" and through the rest of the Release Me's at the end of the song. It honestly sounded more like the live versions from the way that Ed did it.

I am hopeful that this version will pop up soon. It was CLEARLY different and I wish I had been recording it with my phone just so I could listen again (cause I can't find a version of it online).

That said, I had been looking and it does mention in this one article that the song was re-recorded

Hopefully this will pop up on AmazonMP3/Itunes sometime soon. Release has always been one of my favorites so to have a new (even if only slightly new) studio version is kind of exciting to me.

No, I completely agree with this sentiment. I think Into the Wild was a very good movie and I love the soundtrack but the soundtrack ended up making the movie secondary to me because of how it overwhelmed the film. Almost like too much of a great thing made a good things seem average (to me anyway).

That said, the same was not true with Out of the Furnace. Release was only at the beginning and the end (set up and closure). From that perspective I think it was good that they did not have an all Ed score for the movie as was true with Into the Wild.

I found the soundtrack made Into the Wild a better movie.

I can see both sides of the argument on Into The Wild. The music was a distraction but at the end of the day it probably increased my enjoyment of the film.

The director should just release both version (with and without the Vedder soundtrack) on the blu-ray release and let the audience judge.
