No doubt the tide has turned on the issue & it's hard to see it reverting back now. There's a super conservative board I lurk on & this is one of the topics I like to read their comments on as they pitch a fit and stomp their feet.

I don't understand how this is even a thing. I don't give a shit who someone else wants to marry. As a happily divorced man I don't care if a dude wants to marry another dude or a chick wants to marry another chick. I'd love to see stats on divorce rate for same sex marriage. Do you own thing and what makes you happy. Who am I to say you can't do this because this is the right way to act/think/feel. In 2014 it's sad this is an issue. If my daughter says to me she is gay I will say ok sweet, pass the mashed potatoes. Who gives a fuck?

It's really struck me as a generational issue that's now on the verge of extinction. On a forum like this that's filled with Xers and Millennials, pretty much everyone here feels the same way as you.

I can't think of another issue in American history that experienced as remarkable a turnaround as this one in such a short period of time. Gay marriage was a republican wedge issue in 2004.

It's been legal in South Africa since 2006 - one of my sources of pride in SA is its constitution, a very free and inclusive document. Though of course the government hasn't read it in years.

In ten years, there's going to be weed and gays EVERYwhere!

Agreed. I know how homosexuality was thought of in my parents' generation & I can see a big shift in how mine thinks of the same thing. Even now to hear my older relatives discuss anything gay related is like listening to a time capsule. And I see an even bigger shift in opinions in friends of mine that are 15-20 years younger than me.

How old are your parents and their relatives of their generation? It seems to me that Boomers are more split, but still a majority in favor, while the real antipathy has come from the Silents and older. With not a whole lot of people left born before 1943, that's where I see the rapid change coming from.

My parents, aunts & uncles are all in their 60s & 70s. I'm nearly 40.
I didn't know anyone gay when I was growing up and the whole topic itself was taboo.

Having a gay relative does make a difference in families. I have a gay uncle on my mother's side (he's 55 now), and his father would never even acknowledge it, so it was never mentioned at all while I was growing up. When I finally realized that his "friend" of the last 10-15 years was more than just that, I asked my mother about it and the expression on her face told me that this was a question she'd been dreading. She was afraid of how I'd view him. Anyway, my brothers and I didn't care at all, and soon I realized that no one else in the family had a problem with it either (except my grandfather), probably in part because having a gay family member makes it just about impossible to not see things differently. My parents and grandparents were Catholic immigrants from Cuba, so not exactly a group where you'd expect so much support from basically everyone.

Interestingly there was always whispered speculation my dad's youngest cousin was gay, like it was a scandal and certainly not polite conversation. I don't know if that was true or if Timmy was just more, um, cosmopolitan for his time & setting. Either way it had to be tough for him growing up in the rural south in the 50s & 60s. He moved to Atlanta in his 20s and basically lost contact with the family; the only time I met him was when his mother died. That particular part of the family is a mess so I can't fault him for moving to the big city and living his own life, gay or not.
