That Kurt hated Dave stuff is just Courtney Love nonsense.

My basic contention is that bleach, whatever it's charms, is not full of great songwriting - the kind of stuff that puts you in the running for best songwriter of the decade. Never mind and in utero sure, but not bleach. So basically two albums, which is actually not a whole lot of work.
1. I don't really care who gets best songwriter of the decade, those lists are usually dubious.
2. I know 'Rape Me' is on In Utero, I mentioned it because your argument was that he got better as a songwriter, which I don't think is true in a lot of cases, and according to the punk aesthetic, I wouldn't call many of the Bleach songs (or even 'Rape Me', for that matter) 'bad' on its own terms.
Bleach is more 'punk', it's not 'worse' just because it's less commercial / less likely to show up on a Best Of list.
No, it's worse because it's a bunch of crappier songs. And the fact that he got better as a songwriter doesn't mean every thing will be better (although rape me is pretty clever). Scentless Apprentice is an abomination.
Bleach remains, imo, a likeable but unremarkable album elevated tremendously by people's wish for as much kurt cobain material as possible.
I think the same is true of most of the insecticide b-sides.
Maybe my larger issue is with the fact that I think this kind of punk stuff is just generally crap. I suppose this could be a well executed and crafted, highly compelling example of stuff I don't give a shit about. But I have a real hard time imagining any chain of events that convinces me that the writing displayed on bleach comes close to the quality of what is on In Utero and Nevermind, which was really my primary point

Bleach has some GREAT songs on it. I don't think it's as good as Nevermind, Incesticide or In Utero. But that speaks to how good those other three albums are, because Bleach is a badass record. I do think Incesticide is vastly underrated. I'd put it above Bleach and Nevermind.

For fuck's sake Stip, if you insist on torpedoing this thread, then why don't you move everything into a Nirvana thread and close this one. This is supposed to be a Smashing Pumpkins thread. That's what it's for. If you want to talk about how you think Nirvana is overrated, move it somewhere else.

I'm shocked, SHOCKED that all this Nirvana stuff hasn't been moved yet. It's fantastic.

It clearly got stip riled up. I'm just annoyed. I feel like I've spent half of my life arguing about Nirvana over the internet. Now that I'm done with that part of my life, I'd kind of like to leave it there.
Not everyone thinks Nirvana is brilliant. Big fucking deal. I think a lot of sacred cow artists are massively overrated. I just don't feel the need to spend day after day arguing about this stuff over the internet anymore. Sure, I have in the past - but I'm done. It's just too stupid.
This is a Smashing Pumpkins thread. Can we just keep it at that?

I'm sure Billy's up for a bit of discussion on Nirvana
