I don't know if I could say that. I think it is denser and tells a more important story but Breaking Brad is certainly more atmospheric and thrilling. Different shows for me. Both excellent.

I love Breaking Bad. It's a great show.

But as I've pointed out a couple of times before, it's got way too many Margaret Schroeders, which is now my standard term for characters that make me go "welp, hopefully this scene is short." Outside of Walt, Jesse, Mike, and Gus, I pretty much can't stand the cast or the characters. And not in a "you're not supposed to like them" kind of way. They feel two dimensional, and in the case of Skyler and Walt Jr, flat out annoying to have on screen. The top end of a show like Breaking Bad (and Boardwalk Empire, and Dexter, etc) match up just fine with The Wire in terms of quality, but the difference is that The Wire has no characters like that, the entire show is that top end.
I get where you're coming from.

it's the same story, over and over and over.

it shames this thread discussing it.

We could probably take this conversation over to the Breaking Bad thread, but I'm interested in seeing you elaborate on this. I really don't see that at all.

You need to watch more than the first season before even entering this thread, the both of you.

Dukie didn't get a happy ending because it's a realistic show and that's the reality of the situation--some kids will simply be lost. People like Bubbles have to come from somewhere. I too found season 4 heartbreaking because I've worked with low income kids and you just know some of them aren't going to make it, and sometimes it's all too obvious who it is.

As for this show vs. Breaking Bad, it's kinda apples to oranges. The Wire is about a community, and when it really comes down to it Breaking Bad is about the descent of one person. The cinematography of Breaking Bad is also far beyond The Wire, but that's not the focus of the show.

I've never seen an episode of this show. I've heard people like it, though.

thank god. The Wire would not be nearly as powerful if it had the cinematography of Breaking Bad

any discussion of any show even being in the same league as The Wire is laughable.

Based on what I know of you from your post over the years, I think you'd like this show a lot.

I'm going through all the seasons again, currently at 3. I ended up liking 2 a lot more than I remember. I guess it just bothered me that they never worked the stevedors back into the plot. Every season introduces a new element and expands the others, except for the dock.

Just finished up season 3 and am downloading 4 as I type. That was some of the best television I have ever watched.
Spoiler: show
I was glad to see Stringer get iced and I have a bad feeling for Omar in season 4. He's definitely my favorite character in the series.
