Columbia/Legacy is 3/3 with this Miles Davis bootleg series--yet another set that they completely knocked out of the park, both in terms of selection and sound quality. There is a lot of 1970 Miles on record already but this complete set rectifies an old release that was hampered by tacky editing and subpar sound ("Miles Davis at Fillmore"), and things moved fast back then anyway--there are such changes between "It's About That Time" (recorded in March) and this (recorded in June) and the Cellar Door material (recorded in December), to say nothing of the concurrent studio material. A relentless assault of distorted funk, for about 4 straight hours. My kind of stuff.

Good stuff.

Yeah, Bernard Herrmann borrowed a lot from this album to Taxi Drivers score.

I haven't ever given Mingus a fair shake, but listened to 2 of his albums while writing today. Hot damn.

I've been listening to Accelerando by Vijay Iyer Trio this morning and it's absurd that music this good is allowed to exist

That album is great -- one of my favorite albums of the last few years. He just put out a new one ("Break Stuff" -- to my disappointment it doesn't feature a piano trio version of the Limp Bizkit song) -- equally excellent in my opinion.

To be totally honest, I love his music a lot, but I was certain he was already dead

New Miles Davis "At Newport" box set -- Columbia continues to deliver on these bootleg series releases, to my knowledge this is the first officially released live Davis music from 1955 (a brief set with Thelonious Monk that lore has it was directly responsible for Davis's subsequent record deal with Columbia), 1966, 1971, and 1973 (the 1973 set is especially amazing -- recommended to all who like loud, violent noise). Another fine set.

Wynton's a smart man. Besides being a great musician he is also a great speaker. He could do a spoken word tour and I'd go see him.
