But I can totally see how what Lament is saying would be goddamn infuriating.

I think to lay into excellent/influential tracks for being "too obvious" in a tournament trying to find the best of the decade is a bit of a silly position to take. I can totally understand taking issue with obvious songs that you don't care for anyway, though.

You have no idea how often I have people in our general age range ask me some variation of "Oh God, you have to play NEW music at the club? That's so terrible. Music sucks these days!" It makes me want to punch them. And I'm not a violent person.

I have at least 50 or 60 songs for the 00's that aren't 90s related that I love the only issue I've found is that most of the songs are from bands that I only dig one or two tracks and can leave the rest of their music. I have a hard time finding bands to love now.

Surely those people are the same people who think what's on the radio automatically equates to the breadth of music available? I think our age group was slightly spoiled, since we did have a period in the 90's where some great music was also very popular. But that's almost certainly nostalgic revisionism - I'm sure there was a 90/10 split of garbage to good stuff on the radio back then as well. But people don't remember that - they remember THEIR musical experiences and gloss over the crap.

Absolutely this. I find myself loving certain tracks to death, but very rarely finding an artist who I can completely get behind. There've been a few, though.

If I had the #1 overall pick for the 10s, the chances of me taking The Mother We Share with that pick are exceptionally high.

Thing is if someone on here recommends a band you can download their entire discography. Scan through the albums and picks the one or two songs that hit you immediately and make a 10-12 song 'best of' playlist inside of 10 minutes. In the past if you spent $20 on a CD you damn well listened to it 100 times and fell in love. There's no time for love now Dr Jones.

This is very true, and I will agree that it seems harder to find great albums today than it was 20 years ago. But I think the flip side is that it's easier to find great songs than it was 20 years ago.

Yeah, choice can be overwhelming - I first heard a Tom Waits track in 2003, loved it, and didn't listen to anything by him for 3 or 4 years because of the size of his discography. I feel bad not listening to albums in their entirety, though (especially since listening to Sgt Pepper's completely changed how I felt about The Beatles).
