It seems like RM backlash now happens within five days of album release.

If all goes to plan I will be purchasing this tomorrow night after work .Strat wrote:gimmick may wear out at some point.
I'm the furthest thing from a CB Fanboy Strat. Perhaps what I said was a little premature. But for all of the compliments you paid to the record, I wouldn't be surprised if this was up there on multiple lists for album of the year.Strat wrote:But to say (for me obviously) that there will be no better record this year is a little ....well...sounds like something Fanboy strat would say about pearl jam.

I'm still a little confused about your "gimmick" comment.
Maybe I'm too caught up on symmantics, but I don't think her style should be confused as a gimmick. When I hear that word, I think of Eddie Vedder night after night, interview after interview, railing against the wealthy at PJ shows sitting in skyboxes drinking Budweisers after he sings Satan's Bed, and then retiring to his full-floor suite in the Waldorf Astoria with his model wife while drinking a Corona before he boards his private plane to fly him and his entourage to his Hawaiian home on his private beach so he can celebrate New Years Eve with Sean Penn and Bill Maher. There's something very pejorative both with the word "gimmick."Strat wrote:Chris_H_2 wrote:I'm the furthest thing from a CB Fanboy Strat. Perhaps what I said was a little premature. I think she is a one trick pony. I love the trick, but the way she phrases, and her storytelling isn't unlike Craig Finn of the Hold Steady.
Except she sings.Strat wrote:Chris_H_2 wrote:I'm the furthest thing from a CB Fanboy Strat. Perhaps what I said was a little premature. That's more hypocrisy than gimmick. The word might be a bit too strong for what Strat's getting it, but there is definitely a strong stylistic schtick to what Barnett is doing with the whole half-mumbled, wordy vocals thing. And it works for some people, which is great. I'm not really a fan and even less so due to the reheated garage punk instrumental backing that she uses. A lot of singers have pretty defined vocal tics which some people like and others don't. I'm guessing insofar as this one goes, Strat likes it up to a point.Chris_H_2 wrote:Maybe I'm too caught up on symmantics, but I don't think her style should be confused as a gimmick. If it was a one (or even two)-off, it would be hypocrisy. But it's more his thing.Brett wrote:That's more hypocrisy than gimmick.
Not all her songs sound like Pedestrian at Best though, which is what you're describing.Brett wrote:The word might be a bit too strong for what Strat's getting it, but there is definitely a strong stylistic schtick to what Barnett is doing with the whole half-mumbled, wordy vocals thing. Courtney covering Sexual Chocolate would be one of the best things ever.Strat wrote:I love the lord, ah. And if loving the lord is wrong, ah. I dont want to be right. Can i get an amen?
She'd have to take a shower first, though.Strat wrote:Anyways, i would cuddle Courtney Barnett and stuff her in my pocket. Take her home with me and buy her presents.
