Neil Diamond would strike down anyone who stood in his way.
You might be right, friend. On the strength of September Morn alone, you might be right.

Not a word has been said about Steve Miller Band since I resurrected this 10 year old thread.

That’s because Steve Miller Band is a quintessential hits band. I don’t think I have ever heard one of his albums but probably heard his greatest hits cd a lot of times. There’s no debate when you get a perfect answer.

So, I'm thinking there are actually four tiers.

1) Bands that consistently put out great albums. That's not what we're talking about here.

2) Bands that have a couple of great albums and the rest of their records just have a couple of great songs. I could put the Rolling Stones and U2 in this category. I think the rest of the world would probably put Pearl Jam here as well. But they're slack-jawed, dribbling rubes.

3) Bands that truly only released good singles but did consistently over a sustained period of time while never stringing together a full album of greatness. I would, unfortunately, have to put Queen here personally. I think I'd lean toward putting Led Zeppelin here as well. Maybe for both it's because the highs are so high that the mids and lows get incredibly overshadowed.

4) Flashes in various pans. Again, not what we're talking about here.

Led Zep is an absurd inclusion. Maybe you've been swayed by the strength of their GH collections.

Would Jackson Browne count? I have heard a lot of his songs and seem to like them well enough, but I have never once heard a full Jackson Browne album.

Hmm. Kinda understandable. They're an excellent band for hits, but Songs From the Big Chair really is outstanding.

I'll take this opportunity to thank Trag for dying for my sins.

I feel like someone who has successfully eluded the police in a high speed chase. Whew. I just have to say that I don't love Robert Plant's voice and I get tired of his horn ball lyrics after a while. I do, however, love Jimmy Page's guitar playing. His mandolin playing is only so so.

To redeem myself, I'll just add AC/DC and The Beastie Boys to my list of bands that I can be ok with just the hits.
